The Big Bang Theory universe just got a whole lot stranger — and honestly? We’re here for it. HBO Max has finally unveiled the first official trailer for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the boldest spin-off from the beloved nerd-comedy franchise yet, and it’s nothing like what fans expected.
What Is Stuart Fails to Save the Universe?
Forget the couch, the apartment, and the laugh track. This is full-blown sci-fi action comedy — think multiverse-hopping, dystopian alternate realities, and a Matrix-esque sequence where Stuart unplugs himself from a machine in grotesquely hilarious fashion.
The premise? Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, triggering a multiverse Armageddon. Now it’s up to Stuart — the perpetually unlucky, lovably awkward fan favourite — to fix everything before reality collapses entirely.

The Cast You Already Love
Joining Stuart on his chaotic multiverse quest:
- Lauren Lapkus as Denise (Stuart’s girlfriend — their romance finally gets its due!)
- Brian Posehn as Bert, the geologist sidekick
- John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke, the “quantum physicist and all-around pain in the ass”
There’s even buzz that Mayim Bialik and Kaley Cuoco could appear in alternate-universe cameos. Fingers crossed!
Why This Spin-Off Feels Different?
Unlike Young Sheldon or Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage — which are grounded prequels — this show is a full sequel packed with CGI, sci-fi spectacle, and alternate versions of fan-favourite TBBT characters. Creator Chuck Lorre confirmed “a lot of CGI,” signalling a bold creative departure.
As Brian Posehn put it from the WB Discovery upfront stage: “The fun is watching him fail every week.” Kevin Sussman added that fans will finally see where Stuart and Denise’s romance — which was just budding at TBBT’s 2019 finale — actually goes.
