Netflix’s Legends Is Already the Most Gripping British Crime Drama of 2026 — Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Forget everything else on your watchlist. Netflix just dropped Legends, a six-part British crime thriller based on a true story so extraordinary it was almost buried in history — and critics are already calling it unmissable. Here’s the full breakdown before you hit play.

What Is Legends About?

Set in the early 1990s, Legends dramatises a top-secret operation run by Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise, which was losing its war against illegal drug smuggling flooding Britain’s streets. A small group of completely untrained customs officers were given brand-new identities — called “Legends” — and sent deep undercover to infiltrate the country’s most dangerous drug gangs operating out of London and Liverpool.

The series captures not just the thrill of the mission, but the psychological cost of living a double life, surrounded by criminals who would kill if they suspected the truth.

Cast & Characters

The series also incorporates real archival footage and political speeches from the Thatcher era, giving it an authentic historical texture that sets it apart from typical crime dramas.

What Are Critics Saying?

The response has been nothing short of glowing. The Financial Times awarded it five stars, calling it “outstanding TV, elegant and composed.” The Radio Times also gave it five stars, praising creator Forsyth for his skill in making historical narratives feel irresistible. Variety described it as a “gripping tale of found potential and assumed identity,” while Collider called it possibly the most watchable crime drama Netflix puts out this year.

The Real Story Behind It

Legends is rooted in one of Britain’s most remarkable and little-known criminal investigations. As documented on Wikipedia’s entry for the series, the show is a dramatisation of real undercover Customs operations, though some elements have been fictionalised to heighten drama and protect the identities of real officers involved. Filming took place across Farnborough, Camberley, and Muswell Hill, London in 2025.

Should You Watch It?

If you loved The Gold, Top Boy, or Netflix’s own Eric — this is an absolute must-watch. Six tight episodes, a stellar ensemble, and a real story that feels almost too wild to be true.
