Raja Shivaji Box Office: Riteish Deshmukh’s Epic is Rewriting Marathi Cinema’s Record Books — And It’s Just Getting Started

History is being written at the box office, and for once, it’s wearing a Marathi flag. Raja Shivaji, starring and produced by Riteish Deshmukh, is not just a film — it’s a cultural movement that the Marathi audience has been waiting for. Two days in, and the numbers are already unprecedented for the industry.

Raja Shivaji Day-Wise Box Office — A Near-Flat Hold That Screams Confidence

Raja Shivaji collected approximately Rs. 12.25 crore on its second day, with the original Marathi version contributing around Rs. 8.25 crore and the Hindi version adding Rs. 4 crore. This took the two-day cumulative total to approximately Rs. 25.25 crore, split across Marathi (Rs. 17.25 crore approx) and Hindi (Rs. 8 crore approx) versions.

The Day 2 Hold Is the Real Story

The second day saw a mere 5 per cent drop from the holiday opening — far better than the 30–40 per cent decline that would be considered normal after a holiday. The fact that it remained essentially flat is a strong indicator for its full theatrical run. The drop was primarily in Maharashtra, while the rest of India stayed flat or witnessed slight growth. Maharashtra state alone clocked Rs. 19 crore in two days.

Can Sairat’s Record Fall?

This is the biggest Marathi film of all time in terms of cost and scale, and its opening numbers are far ahead of anything Marathi cinema has previously seen. The film is benchmarking itself against blockbusters like Chhaava and Tanhaji — both based on the Maratha empire — which are among the biggest-ever grossers in Maharashtra state. Chhaava achieved nearly 20x its opening day collection, while Tanhaji reached close to 25x.

The legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is one of the most beloved and emotionally resonant subjects across Maharashtra and India. When such stories are told on a grand cinematic scale, audiences don’t just watch — they celebrate. That’s exactly the energy Raja Shivaji is riding.

The highest-grossing Marathi film to date is Sairat at around Rs. 100 crore, and Raja Shivaji appears highly favoured to surpass it.
