If you blinked and missed Dead Man’s Wire during its theatrical run, consider yourself lucky — because now you get to experience one of 2026’s most gripping true-crime thrillers from the comfort of your couch. Directed by the legendary Gus Van Sant and starring Bill Skarsgård, Al Pacino, and Colman Domingo, this one is arriving on Netflix on May 28, 2026, and it’s absolutely worth clearing your schedule for.

Dead Man’s Wire — Overview

The True Story That Will Leave You Speechless

The film winds the clock back to February 1977, following Tony Kiritsis — an Indianapolis man who, feeling cheated out of a commercial real estate deal by a corrupt mortgage company, takes matters into his own hands. Armed with a sawed-off shotgun, Tony takes mortgage broker Richard Hall hostage, rigging a “dead man’s wire” from the trigger to Hall’s neck — meaning if Tony is tackled or the cops shoot, the gun automatically goes off.

What follows is an intense 63-hour standoff broadcast live across the country, with Tony quickly becoming a complicated anti-hero figure for the working class, communicating his demands to the police and the public through smooth-talking local radio DJ Fred Temple. whats-on-netflix

It’s the kind of story that sounds too wild to be real — and yet it happened. Learn more about the true crime genre and its history in film on Wikipedia.

A Cast That Should Not Be This Good

Gus Van Sant, in his first feature film in six years, assembled an absolute powerhouse cast — Bill Skarsgård as the desperate and frantic Tony Kiritsis, Dacre Montgomery as the terrified hostage Richard Hall, Colman Domingo as radio DJ Fred Temple, Al Pacino as the sleazy mortgage magnate M.L. Hall, Cary Elwes, and Myha’la as Page.

Every one of those names alone would justify watching. Together, they form one of the most stacked ensembles of 2026 — and Skarsgård in particular delivers the kind of live-wire, deeply unsettling performance that reminds you why he’s one of the most compelling actors working today.

Why Critics Loved It?

The movie drew heavy comparisons to 70s classics like Dog Day Afternoon and Network upon release, earning praise for its gritty, refurbished broadcast-camera look and Skarsgård’s captivating performance. It currently holds an impressive 91% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with the Certified Fresh rating.

That’s not a film you skip. That’s a film you add to the top of your queue immediately.

This marks the first time Netflix has teamed up with newly established indie distributor Row K Entertainment whats-on-netflix — a notable partnership worth watching given the studio’s growing slate.
