Portable Gaming Devices: How Switch OLED and Steam Deck Redefined this

People tend to forget just how much the Nintendo Switch OLED and Valve’s Steam Deck shook up the scene when they first arrived. The Switch OLED made a splash with its vivid 7-inch screen, plus the ability to switch between docked and handheld play. That brought true console gaming on the go—suddenly you could dive into every major Nintendo Switch game on the train or in your living room.

Valve’s Steam Deck answered a different call, letting PC gamers carry their entire Steam library wherever they went. It could run AAA games at settings that would’ve embarrassed plenty of laptops back in 2022. What really mattered: these devices proved you no longer had to give up power or performance just to play on the move.

IGN points out that the Steam Deck’s open Linux-based OS and customizable controls sparked a wave of DIY enthusiasts and tinkerers. Meanwhile, the Switch OLED, with its exclusive games and reliable battery, stayed a family favorite. Fast forward to 2026, and both are seen as turning points—not the final destination.
