It’s Official — Shoot Has Begun

Filming has officially begun, with filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane in the director’s chair — the production banner shared a clapperboard photo on Instagram to announce the start of production, and Motwane also shared a photo of the Sourav Ganguly stand.

Netizens immediately erupted in excitement — one wrote: “Ganguly is the man who changed the face of Indian cricket,” while another declared that “after this film, Rajkummar Rao will be top of Bollywood.”

The Rajkummar Rao Transformation

This isn’t a casual casting call. This is method acting at its most ambitious.

Rajkummar Rao is currently undergoing an intense physical transformation to embody Ganguly’s athletic build from his late 1990s prime — and is also practising left-handed batting routines daily to mirror Ganguly’s iconic “God of the Off-Side” style.

Rao has also been learning Bengali for the biopic, with his wife Patralekhaa helping him. The actor confirmed: “Now that Dada has already said it, let me make it official — yes, I am playing him. It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

What Will the Film Cover?

The biopic aims to chronicle Ganguly’s rise from a talented young batsman to a fearless leader who transformed Indian cricket, spanning complex international shoots across Lord’s Cricket Ground in London and Eden Gardens in Kolkata, two venues with deep emotional significance in Ganguly’s journey.

Ganguly himself shared: “It will release next December. Shooting doesn’t take much time — about three months — but pre-production, story writing, and scripting take a lot of time.”

Bottom Line: The Dada Sourav Ganguly movie has cameras rolling, a December 2026 release target, and one of Bollywood’s finest actors poised to recreate one of cricket’s greatest stories. If Rajkummar Rao pulls this off — and there’s every reason to believe he will — Dada could be the sporting biopic of a generation.

Set the reminder. December 2026 is going to be historic. 🏏
