The Mummy Rises Again — And This Time It’s Pure Horror: Lee Cronin’s April 2026 Reimagining Is Unlike Anything You’ve Seen Before

Forget adventure-comedy swashbuckling. Forget Tom Cruise running from CGI sandstorms. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is a bold, contemporary reimagining that promises to dig “deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening” — and it’s heading to theatres on April 17, 2026. If Evil Dead Rise gave you nightmares, buckle up.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy — Everything at a Glance

What Is The Mummy Story?

The young daughter of a journalist disappears without a trace in the desert. The shattered family is stunned when the girl suddenly reappears eight years later — but what should have been a joyful reunion quickly turns into a true nightmare.

The film follows a family of four — Jack Reynor as Charlie, Laia Costa as his partner, Shylo Molina as their son, and Natalie Grace as their daughter Katie — who, after disappearing following a mysterious curse, returns eight years later fundamentally changed in ways no one can explain.

Lee Cronin himself has described the film as “a puzzle box” — a deeply layered mystery where the horror unfolds gradually, drawing tonal inspiration from Poltergeist (1982) and Se7en (1995). This isn’t a monster-chase film. It’s a psychological dread machine wearing an ancient Egyptian mask.

The Dream Team Behind It

The film is produced by James Wan through Atomic Monster and Jason Blum through Blumhouse Productions — two of the most powerful names in modern horror — with distribution handled by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.

Director Lee Cronin previously helmed Evil Dead Rise (2023) and The Hole in the Ground — establishing himself as one of the sharpest horror voices of his generation. When Wan and Blum both back the same filmmaker, the horror community pays attention.

Producers James Wan and Jason Blum have praised Cronin’s “bold and contemporary vision,” positioning the film as a fresh, terrifying take on ancient horror that is completely standalone and unconnected to Universal’s previous Mummy franchise.

🏺 How Does It Fit Into The Mummy Universe?

This film exists in its own world entirely. With Universal holding the rights to the classic Mummy saga dating back to Boris Karloff’s 1932 original — and with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz confirmed to return for a fourth instalment in 2028 — Warner Bros. needed to clearly differentiate their take, which is why Cronin’s name was officially attached to the title.

Warner Bros. is fresh off a dominant night at the 2026 Academy Awards, having backed both Sinners and One Battle After Another — making this another high-profile horror release from a studio clearly back in its stride.
