YouTube Premium Lite in India Gets Background Play and Downloads

If you’ve been holding off on YouTube Premium because of the price, this update might change your mind. YouTube has started rolling out background play and offline downloads to its Premium Lite subscribers in India — two features that were previously exclusive to the full Premium plan. The rollout is gradual and will reach all Indian Premium Lite subscribers over the coming weeks, working across smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs.

YouTube Premium Lite: What’s New vs What You Get

Background play lets videos keep running even when the YouTube app is minimised or the screen is locked — a lifesaver for anyone who uses YouTube for podcasts, interviews, or long-form content while multitasking. Offline downloads let you save supported videos and watch them without an internet connection, which is a genuine game-changer for commuters and anyone on patchy data.

Why This Is a Smart Move by YouTube in India

Premium Lite was always a budget-friendly entry point into the ad-free experience, but the absence of background play made it feel incomplete — especially compared to Spotify and other audio-first apps that offer this as standard. Adding these two features dramatically closes the gap between Lite and full Premium, giving Indian users more value without necessarily paying for the top-tier plan.

India is one of YouTube’s largest markets globally, and with over 462 million internet users actively consuming video content, even incremental upgrades to lower-cost tiers can have massive reach. For users who primarily want fewer ads and the freedom to listen while doing other things, Premium Lite now makes a compelling case. Check out more app news and reviews on Technosports.
