What Anderson Said — And Why It Matters

James Anderson is not a man given to hyperbole. The former England pacer, who became the first fast bowler in history to reach 600 Test wickets, ESPNcricinfo has seen every great bowler of the modern era up close. When he speaks about bowling, the world listens.

And what he said about Bumrah was extraordinary. Speaking on a BBC podcast, Anderson said: “The thing about Bumrah is, I look at him and think, I don’t think you can learn anything from him. Like, he’s an absolute freak. There’s not one bowler in the world in any format, men or women who can bowl six yorkers out of six and absolutely nail it every time.” ESPNcricinfo

Anderson even highlighted the genius of Bumrah’s variation — noting that in his final over against England in the semi-final, he nailed five fast yorkers and one slow-ball yorker, making it virtually impossible for batters to adjust. ESPNcricinfo

The former England bowler also acknowledged that England’s batters made the right call by not going after Bumrah. Players like Jacob Bethell and Sam Curran simply tried to survive his overs rather than target him, instead taking their chances against the other bowlers. ESPNcricinfo

The contrast was stark — when Shivam Dube bowled the final over, Jofra Archer smashed 22 off it. Anderson pointed out that Dube was trying to bowl a yorker and “was missing by a decent amount” — making Bumrah’s precision all the more jaw-dropping by comparison. ESPNcricinfo

In the final against New Zealand, with India defending 255/5, Bumrah has already removed Rachin Ravindra first ball and conceded just 5 runs in the powerplay’s closing over. Anderson’s words are looking prophetic in real time. Learn more about Jasprit Bumrah on Wikipedia.
