If you use PhonePe for daily UPI transactions, there’s a genuinely useful update live right now. PhonePe has launched biometric authentication for UPI payments — meaning you can now approve transactions up to ₹5,000 using your fingerprint or face unlock instead of typing your UPI PIN every time.

PhonePe Biometric UPI: Everything You Need to Know

PhonePe is among the first major UPI players to bring this to market at scale. The feature works across peer-to-peer transfers, QR code payments at stores, online transactions, and even bank balance checks.

How to Enable Biometric Pay on PhonePe

Setting it up takes under a minute:

  1. Open the PhonePe app → go to Profile
  2. Tap Manage Payments
  3. Tap the Biometric Pay icon
  4. Enable for your linked bank account(s)
  5. Complete a one-time confirmation using your UPI PIN + biometrics

After setup, eligible transactions up to ₹5,000 will prompt your fingerprint or face ID instead of the PIN. If biometric verification fails — poor lighting, sensor issues — it falls back to PIN instantly with no failed transaction.

Why This Actually Matters

Two pain points solved at once: shoulder-surfing (someone reading your PIN in a crowded market or bus) and failed transactions from incorrect PIN entries. Both are real, everyday problems for India’s 65 crore PhonePe users. Device-level biometric verification means the authentication never leaves your phone — it’s hardware-grade security, not just a software workaround.

NPCI has opened biometric UPI authentication to the broader ecosystem, so expect Google Pay and Paytm to follow with similar features soon.
