Shark Tank India Season 5 Pitchers Call Out Edited Episodes and Misunderstood Pitches

The cameras stop rolling, the deal is made — or isn’t — and then the real drama begins. Several Shark Tank India Season 5 pitchers have taken to social media to express frustration after watching their edited episodes air on Sony LIV, claiming the cutting room floor changed their story entirely. Their core grievance: the sharks didn’t understand their business, and the edits made things worse. Here’s what went wrong inside the tank.

Shark Tank India Season 5 — The Controversy at a Glance

The PropFTX Case — The Most Vocal Post-Pitch Backlash

PropFTX’s Rajeev Kumar Chhabra and Varun Singhi pitched fractional real estate investment using blockchain and AI — asking ₹1 crore for 1.5% equity at a ₹66 crore valuation in Episode 28. The concept: like buying pizza slices, investors could own legal shares of premium properties without needing crores upfront.

The sharks tore it apart. Kunal Bahl attacked the name’s association with the infamous FTX crypto scam. Anupam Mittal called Indian investors unready for complex alternative assets. Varun Alagh flagged unclear regulatory frameworks. No deal was made — and PropFTX’s founders felt their actual depth of preparation, including AI valuation tools with 92% accuracy in Bangalore, SEBI’s SM REIT compliance, and escrow security systems, was simply never given space to breathe on air.

Their post-episode statement: the sharks didn’t understand what they were building, and the edited version made the pitch look far simpler than it was.

Why Editing Is the Hidden Villain on Reality TV

Shark Tank India films pitches that run significantly longer than the 8–12 minutes aired per startup. What gets cut matters enormously — a founder’s clarification about regulation, their response to a shark’s misread of their numbers, or a key moment where a misunderstanding was corrected. All of it can vanish in the edit.

This is a well-documented tension in reality television globally — producers shape narratives for entertainment value, while founders live with the professional consequences of how their business is perceived. For Indian startup founders, a bad edit on Shark Tank can affect investor perception, customer trust, and hiring — long after the episode airs.

Other Season 5 Pitches That Sparked Debate

Season 5 has been a minefield of polarising moments beyond PropFTX:

• Currently (Ep 29): Anupam Mittal told founder Mitesh Shethwala — “That’s the stupidest thing you’ve said” — in response to a valuation claim. The moment went viral, but the pitch behind it was far more nuanced than the soundbite suggested.
• AnjaniBooks (Ep 29): Varun Alagh walked out before the pitch even started, dismissing it as “just a dropshipping business” — a characterisation the founder pushed back on publicly.
• 3Sisters (Ep 30): No offer was made for their non-alcoholic beverage brand — but the founders felt key revenue context was removed in editing.

What This Means for Future Pitchers

Season 5’s pitcher frustration is a warning to any founder entering the tank: prepare for the edit, not just the pitch. The sharks’ questions and the room’s dynamics may look entirely different by the time the episode airs. Founders are increasingly using Instagram and LinkedIn posts to offer their “director’s cut” — a trend that is itself becoming a second wave of publicity.
