The Record-Breaking Success Story
KPop: Demon Hunters didn’t start as a phenomenon. Initial metrics looked merely “okay” during the first 10 days on Netflix. But around day 14, something magical happened—rewatches exploded, and word-of-mouth spread like wildfire. By day 91, it had become Netflix’s highest-viewed movie in history, surpassing every film released between 2023 and 2025.

The film follows Kpop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey who secretly moonlight as demon hunters protecting their fans. Their biggest challenge? A rival boy band composed of demons in disguise. The concept resonated globally, creating an animated phenomenon unlike anything Netflix had seen.
Why the Agonizing Wait?
Sony Animation president Kristine Belson revealed the hard truth: the creative team hasn’t started pre-production because they’re too busy winning awards. When asked if directors Kang and Appelhans were mapping out the sequel, Belson explained they first need to finish the awards circuit.
“After all the noise and awards and big parties with big people—yes. It’ll be back to the two of them in a room,” she confirmed.
When The Hollywood Reporter suggested a 2029 release seemed far-fetched, Belson reportedly touched her nose—a gesture indicating that date might even be optimistic. Translation: expect 2030 or 2031 at the earliest.
Quality Over Speed
Sony Animation co-president Damien de Froberville emphasized the sequel will mirror their approach with the Spider-Verse films—prioritizing quality over rushed timelines. “The world is so rich—the world of the demons and the pop star element, what happened to Jinu. There’s so much we could expand into,” he explained.
The extensive production timeline reflects animation’s labor-intensive nature, especially when aiming for the quality leap that made the original so special.
What Happens in the Meantime?
Netflix won’t leave fans completely empty-handed. The HUNTR/X singers already performed during Netflix’s NFL Christmas broadcast, with rumors of expanded content coming. Additionally, an animated short titled Debut: A KPOP Demon Hunters Story received a rating last year, though its release remains uncertain.
The merchandise machine has finally caught up too, with toys and collectibles now widely available—just in time for the long wait ahead.
The Silver Lining
While patience tests fans, the delay ensures the sequel receives the same meticulous care that made the original a masterpiece. As Belson noted, the film needed time to find its audience on Netflix—time theaters wouldn’t have provided. That organic growth created something special.
