In football, when two legends meet in the same league, sparks inevitably fly. But this time, those sparks came from an unexpected place—a private joke between former Real Madrid teammates that allegedly irked Cristiano Ronaldo. Karim Benzema’s transition to Al-Hilal has already created waves in the Saudi Pro League, and not all of them are positive for the five-time Golden Ball winner currently with Al-Nassr.

The Joke That Ruffled Feathers

According to The Telegraph, Benzema made a pointed jest to Ronaldo following his move to Al-Hilal. The Frenchman claimed he’d received not just a lucrative pay raise, but also a realistic shot at winning the Saudi title—a direct jab at Ronaldo’s unfulfilled ambitions with Al-Nassr.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Ronaldo. While Benzema made an explosive debut with a hat-trick for Al-Hilal, the Portuguese legend has been conspicuously absent from Al-Nassr’s recent matches. Not due to injury, but reportedly due to frustration over the club’s lack of winter market activity.

Ronaldo’s Silent Protest: Two Missed Games

Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence speaks volumes. Despite earning an astronomical £500,000 per day—the most lucrative contract in global sports—CR7 is visibly unhappy with Al-Nassr’s direction. The club failed to secure major signings during the January transfer window, leaving Ronaldo feeling unsupported in his quest for a domestic title.

This is particularly galling for someone with such championship pedigree. Ronaldo won 32 major trophies during his career, yet his sole objective in Saudi Arabia—capturing the domestic title—remains elusive. Benzema’s taunt, intentional or not, touched a raw nerve.

The Saudi Pro League’s New Battlefield

Player	Current Club	Status	Contract Value
Karim Benzema	Al-Hilal	Active, scoring	Higher than Al-Ittihad
Cristiano Ronaldo	Al-Nassr	Protesting window	£500,000/day
League Position	SPL 2025-26	Al-Hilal leading	Title race wide open

Al-Hilal’s dominant league position gives them clear title favorites status, especially now with Benzema’s immediate impact. Benzema’s hat-trick on debut signals a player arriving at peak confidence, ready to replicate his European success in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Al-Nassr’s recruitment failures create a widening gap that money alone can’t bridge. Ronaldo’s frustration is justified—he’s competing against elite competition with inferior squad support compared to direct rivals.

The Soured Friendship

What makes this drama particularly poignant is that Benzema and Ronaldo spent years as teammates at Real Madrid, winning Champions League titles together. That shared history makes the apparent tension even more meaningful. Former teammates don’t typically engage in public ridicule, yet here we are—a private joke becoming public knowledge through reliable reporting.
