Hardware leaker Kepler L2 has revealed exciting specifications for Sony‘s upcoming PlayStation 6, suggesting the next-gen console will feature 30GB of GDDR7 RAM—nearly double the PS5’s current capacity. However, this memory upgrade may come with a price tag increase of around $100 due to rising RAM costs.

The Memory Configuration Explained

According to Kepler L2’s leak on VideoCardz, Sony will use ten 3GB GDDR7 memory modules arranged in a clamshell configuration on both sides of the motherboard. While the memory bus decreases from 256-bit (PS5) to 160-bit, the higher 32 Gbps speed per chip delivers 640 GB/s bandwidth—approximately 11% faster than the PS5 Pro.

This represents a significant upgrade from the PS5’s 16GB GDDR6 setup, providing developers with substantially more memory headroom for next-generation gaming experiences.

The Price Concern

The tech industry is currently facing a memory crisis with RAM prices rising quickly, and supply constraints are expected to continue for several years. While some suggest 20GB would be more economical, Kepler L2 argues that amount wouldn’t suffice for PS6’s performance targets.

The leaker estimates the additional memory could add approximately $100 to the console’s MSRP, meaning Sony may need to absorb higher costs during the first year or two until memory prices stabilize.

What This Means for Gaming

The 30GB capacity enables developers to create games with more detailed textures, larger open worlds, and advanced AI systems without memory bottlenecks. Combined with AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture and enhanced upscaling through PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), the PS6 aims to deliver performance comparable to an RTX 4080.

The PlayStation 6 is expected to launch in late 2027 or early 2028, with backward compatibility for PS4 and PS5 titles confirmed.
