Peddi: Ram Charan’s Rural Action Drama Gets Digital Release Confirmed Post-Theatrical Run

Ram Charan’s highly anticipated rural action drama Peddi has officially been confirmed for streaming following its theatrical release. Netflix announced Peddi as part of its comprehensive Telugu film slate for 2026 on Makara Sankranthi (January 16). The film is scheduled for theatrical release on March 27, 2026, across Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada languages. Netflix has acquired the post-theatrical digital rights for a reported Rs. 105 crores, making it one of the biggest OTT deals for a Telugu solo project. Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, the film stars Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor with music composed by AR Rahman.

Film Details and Cast

The film explores a rural, emotional journey set in 1980s Andhra Pradesh. Ram Charan underwent significant physical transformation for his role, working with fitness coach Shivoham Bhatt to authentically portray the character. Janhvi Kapoor, known for her roles in films like Helmed and Mili, plays the female lead opposite Charan, marking their pairing in this ambitious project.

Supporting cast members including Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar and veteran actor Jagapathi Babu bring credibility and depth to the ensemble, suggesting rich character work throughout the narrative.

Story and Concept

The film’s tagline states: “Peddi is not just the story of a sportsman, but of those left behind.” The narrative follows a spirited villager in 1980s rural Andhra Pradesh who unites his community through sports to defend their collective pride against a powerful rival. The word “Peddi” in Telugu derives from “Pedda,” meaning “big,” “elder,” or “important,” often referring to a respected or mature person holding significant community position.

This thematic focus on communal bond, social justice, and personal growth positions Peddi as character-driven entertainment with substantial dramatic substance beyond conventional action sequences.

Technical Excellence

A.R. Rahman’s musical composition anchors the film’s emotional landscape. Rahman completed three tracks by March 2024, with the first single “Chikiri” released in November 2025 across five languages. T-Series acquired music rights for Rs. 35 crores, reflecting confidence in the soundtrack’s commercial appeal. Director Buchi Babu Sana briefed Rahman to bring “energy and soulfulness” to the composition, creating a sonically sophisticated experience.

Cinematographer R. Rathnavelu, known for stunning visual storytelling, captures rural Andhra Pradesh’s authentic landscape across filming locations in Mysuru, Hyderabad, Colombo, Kanyakumari, and Pune.

Production Scale and Timeline

Filming commenced in November 2024 in Mysuru, with production completing by November 2025. The film’s technical excellence, including action choreography by Sham Kaushal (featuring a factory confrontation sequence between Charan and Rajkumar), demonstrates substantial production investment and creative ambition.

Netflix’s Strategic Commitment

Netflix’s Rs. 105 crore acquisition reflects strategic confidence in Peddi’s pan-Indian appeal and Ram Charan’s streaming potential. This deal, announced during Netflix’s Telugu film slate announcement, positions Peddi among premium Telugu releases getting significant platform investment.

Netflix Vice President Monika Shergill stated: “Telugu cinema has a deeply engaged audience shaped by its scale, ambitious storytelling, and strong emotional connect.” This commitment underscores Netflix’s continued investment in Telugu cinema as central to its international content strategy.

Post-Theatrical Streaming Timeline

Following the standard 45-60 day theatrical window from March 27, 2026, Peddi is expected to arrive on streaming platforms in June-July 2026.

This timeline allows maximum theatrical revenue generation before digital transition, ensuring both theatrical success and substantial streaming availability.
