Tom Brady Reveals Gisele Bündchen’s Influence on His NFL Retirement Decision

Tom Brady has opened up about the personal struggles that led to his 2023 retirement, revealing that marital difficulties with ex-wife Gisele Bündchen significantly influenced his decision to end his legendary 23-season NFL career. The candid admission offers rare insight into the human cost of professional athletic greatness.

Tom Brady Career Overview

The Personal Toll Behind the Decision

Family Issues During Final Season

Speaking on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Brady candidly discussed the emotional weight of his final NFL season:

“My last season was tough. I was going through, I had a lot of family issues. It just took a lot out of me in terms of my ability to continue to play. I had 23 years of it, so I didn’t feel like I was missing anything retiring.”

The quarterback’s divorce from supermodel Gisele Bündchen became finalized in 2022, during what would be his final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The timing reveals how personal struggles intersected with professional demands.

Shifting Perspectives on the Game

Brady revealed an interesting evolution in his relationship with football:

“When I got older, I almost enjoyed practice more than playing. Because playing, it was a relief to win. It’s never satisfying, even for me. Sometimes winning and not winning like you would expect.”

This admission challenges the perception that championships brought him complete fulfillment, suggesting that even seven Super Bowl victories couldn’t fully satisfy the competitive drive.

The Marathon Metaphor

Understanding Athletic Longevity

Brady compared his career to running a marathon, offering profound perspective on sustained excellence:

“Everyone loves to run the first four miles of the marathon, and everyone loves to run the last two miles of the marathon. It’s those middle 20 miles that are hard.”

This metaphor perfectly captures the grueling reality of maintaining elite performance over two decades—the unsexy, grinding middle years where physical decline meets relentless expectations.
