Lionel Messi was awarded Golden Boot in World Cup, summer 2014 which was a mistake admitted by former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, and once again he revealed it in media on an interview with AS.
Blatter expressed how he got surprised when he came to know about the announcement, though Messi was performing well and in good form as he scored four goals and one assist which helped Argentina huge but he thinks it was not the right decision.
He told AS during the interview “Shall I be diplomatic or shall I tell you the truth? Listen, I was myself a little bit surprised when I saw Lionel Messi coming up for best player of the tournament.”
“I think the decision was incorrect. I was surprised when I received the committee’s decision. They told me they had only looked at 10 of the players who took part in the final.”
“If you compare the beginning of the tournament and why finally the Argentina team got into the final, they were decisive and I think that influenced the decision.”
When Messi scored four and assisted once throughout the tournament whereas Thomas Muller pushed Germany by five goals and three assists. Also, Robben scored three and assist one in seven games.
Football fans throughout the world criticized the FIFA Committee’s decision when Messi was chosen for the award. According to some, Colombia’s James Rodriguez or Germany’s Manuel Neuer winners of Golden Boot and Golden Glove respectively could be more deserving.
