Farhan Akhtar's 120 Bahadur Creates History: First Film to Release in 800+ Defence Theatres Across India

In a groundbreaking moment for Indian cinema, Farhan Akhtar’s upcoming war epic “120 Bahadur” has become the first film ever to release across India’s entire defence theatre network. This historic initiative ensures that the soldiers whose heroism the film celebrates will be among the first to witness their own story on the big screen.

Set to release on November 21, 2025, Farhan Akhtar portrays Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, PVC, in this powerful tribute to the 120 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Battle of Rezang La in 1962. The film’s unprecedented defence theatre rollout, facilitated through PictureTime’s mobile cinema network, will reach over 800 cinema halls serving India’s military community.

Farhan Akhtar’s Historic Achievement with Defence Theatre Release

Farhan Akhtar’s 120 Bahadur is rewriting the rules of Indian film distribution. Through a partnership with PictureTime and GenSync Brat Media, the film will screen exclusively for the defence community in more than 800 cinema halls nationwide—a first in Indian cinema history.

Sushil Chaudhary, Founder-CEO of PictureTime, highlighted the significance: There are 1.5 million active soldiers and over six million viewers, but only 30 percent of India’s 20-million strong veteran and family audience has access to defense cinemas. This initiative aims to bridge that gap.

The Battle That Inspired Farhan Akhtar’s Role

Farhan Akhtar takes on one of his most challenging roles as Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, Param Vir Chakra awardee. The film centers on the Battle of Rezang La, the 1962 conflict in which 120 Indian soldiers of Charlie Company, 13 Kumaon Regiment, fought Chinese forces at an altitude of over 16,000 feet in Ladakh, with 114 soldiers killed in action.

The battle remains one of the most heroic last stands in military history, where outnumbered Indian soldiers defended their post against overwhelming odds, choosing sacrifice over surrender.

Why This Role Matters to Farhan Akhtar

Known for his transformative performances in biopics, Farhan Akhtar considers such roles deeply meaningful. Having delivered a career-defining performance in “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag,” he underwent intense preparation to portray Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, promising audiences a never-seen-before avatar.

The actor-producer-director has personally invested in ensuring the film authentically honors the soldiers’ bravery, working closely with military historians and veterans during production.

Special Paid Previews Mark Battle’s 63rd Anniversary

In another first for Hindi cinema, Farhan Akhtar and the makers announced special paid previews on November 18, 2025—three days before the nationwide release—to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the Battle of Rezang La.

Farhan Akhtar shared on social media that this unprecedented move allows audiences to experience the film before its official release while honoring the soldiers who made history on that fateful day in 1962.

Defence Minister Honours Farhan’s Initiative

The significance of Farhan Akhtar’s 120 Bahadur was further elevated when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled a special “My Stamp” commemorating the Rezang La War Memorial. The ceremony, attended by Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, and director Razneesh Ghai, marked a symbolic gesture of national remembrance.

Farhan Akhtar expressed gratitude on social media, acknowledging the honor of having the Defence Minister inaugurate the stamp celebrating the martyred soldiers’ bravery and sacrifice.

Reaching Underserved Military Communities

The defence theatre rollout addresses a longstanding gap in entertainment access for armed forces personnel. Through PictureTime’s mobile cinema network, Farhan’s film will reach soldiers and their families posted in remote and previously underserved regions across India.

This initiative brings high-quality cinematic experiences to those who have dedicated their lives to national service, ensuring they can watch a film honoring their own community with dignity and comfort.

Excel Entertainment’s Vision Behind the Release

Vishal Ramchandani, CEO of Excel Entertainment, stated: “‘120 Bahadur’ honors the courage and sacrifice of our armed forces. We feel truly privileged that the soldiers whose spirit the film celebrates will be watching it with their families”.

Farhan’s production house has consistently backed meaningful cinema, and this defence theatre initiative represents their commitment to ensuring stories reach the audiences they’re meant to serve.

International Action Standards in Farhan Akhtar’s 120 Bahadur

Following the success of army-based film “Lakshya,” Farhan and Excel Entertainment have spared no expense for 120 Bahadur. The production reportedly roped in an international crew for key action sequences, creating an uncompromised cinematic product designed for large-scale theatrical impact.

The film was shot extensively in Ladakh’s breathtaking yet challenging terrain, with Farhan sharing glimpses from base camp that showcased the majestic beauty where the actual battle took place.

Star-Studded Cast

While Farhan Akhtar leads the ensemble, he’s joined by talented actors including Raashii Khanna as the female lead, alongside Sparsh Walia, Vivan Bhatena, Dhanveer Singh, Eijaz Khan, and veteran actor Ajinkya Deo. The diverse cast brings depth to this sweeping war epic that promises emotional resonance beyond action sequences.

Marketing Strategy and Audience Anticipation

Farhan and the makers are implementing a longer-than-usual marketing campaign to create awareness for the theatrical release. The teaser was screened alongside “War 2” in August, ensuring massive reach across multiplexes nationwide during the Independence Day weekend.

The strategic rollout aims to build word-of-mouth momentum, with early previews designed to generate authentic audience reactions that will drive conversation ahead of the wide release.

Farhan Akhtar’s Future Projects

Beyond 120 Bahadur, Farhan Akhtar is preparing to direct “Don 3,” expected to begin filming in January 2026. The film will feature Ranveer Singh and Kriti Sanon in leading roles, marking Farhan’s return to the director’s chair after focusing on acting in recent years.

This dual role as actor-producer-director showcases Farhan’s multifaceted talent and his continued influence on contemporary Indian cinema.

Farhan Akhtar’s 120 Bahadur represents more than just a film release—it’s a national tribute that ensures the heroes of Rezang La receive the recognition they deserve. By bringing this story directly to defence theatres, Farhan Akhtar has created a historic moment that bridges cinema and service, entertainment and honor.
