Understanding Dhelmise’s Passive: Steelworker

Dhelmise gains a shield at regular intervals when its moves damage enemy Pokemon, with each shield powering up the next basic attack. This creates a cycle where aggressive play rewards you with defensive buffs and enhanced damage, making Dhelmise surprisingly durable during extended teamfights.

Best Moveset Combinations

Build #1: Anchor Shot + Power Whip (Crowd Control Master)

This combination focuses on isolating priority targets and locking them down with devastating crowd control.

Anchor Shot throws the anchor to stun an opponent before pulling them towards Dhelmise, while Power Whip lashes the anchor horizontally to damage and slow targets, with enemies caught at the edge taking extra damage and becoming unable to act.

Combo Execution: Land Anchor Shot to pull enemies → immediately follow with Power Whip’s edge for the stun → unleash basic attacks while they’re helpless.

Build #2: Anchor Shot + Whirlpool (Sustained DPS)

This build centers on attacking opponents after using Whirlpool to quickly reduce its cooldown, with every third Whirlpool use spawning a vortex that pulls enemies toward Dhelmise.

Strategy: Hook with Anchor Shot → activate Whirlpool → spam basic attacks to reduce cooldown → repeat.

Optimal Held Items

Anchor Shot + Power Whip Build

Attack Weight provides large Attack boosts with stacks, Razor Claw adds slowing effects on basic attacks after using moves, and Accel Bracer improves overall damage via Attack stat bonus plus cooldown reduction.

Battle Item: Eject Button for repositioning

Emblem Setup: 6 Brown (Attack) + 6 White (HP)

Anchor Shot + Whirlpool Build

Muscle Band improves attacks via increased damage and attack speed synergizing with Whirlpool’s cooldown mechanic, while Rapid-Fire Scarf further increases attack speed for faster cooldown reduction.

Alternative Items: Weakness Policy, Focus Band

Battle Item: X Attack for amplified burst damage

Unite Move: Seaweed Snare

Dhelmise launches its anchor to bind a chosen enemy, locking them in place before charging at them for additional damage and stunning, with any enemies hit along the way being shoved and damaged, converting a portion of all damage dealt into healing.

When to Use: Secure objectives like Regieleki, isolate enemy carries during teamfights, or guarantee kills on low-health targets trying to escape.

Dhelmise Counters

Dhelmise’s effectiveness drops against Pokemon that can dodge, outrange, or interrupt its moves.

Hard Counters:

  • Pikachu: Outranges Dhelmise and can interrupt with Thunder
  • Dodrio: High mobility makes Anchor Shot difficult to land
  • Glaceon: Can kite effectively and punish from distance
  • Mimikyu: Disguise ability negates crucial combo starters
  • Mega Lucario: Superior close-range burst damage

Favorable Matchups:

  • Slower tanks like Snorlax and Blastoise
  • Low-mobility attackers without dashes
  • Pokemon weak to sustained crowd control

Early Game Strategy (Levels 1-7)

Clear Bunnelbies quickly in lane, prioritize Indeedees at bottom lane for more experience, and reach level 5 to learn your first move while hunting wild Pokemon to farm experience from Altaria and Swablus.

Focus on safe farming until level 7 when you unlock both moves. Dhelmise becomes significantly stronger once the full combo is available.

Mid-Late Game Domination (Levels 8+)

Upon reaching level 9 learn your Unite Move, stick with allies to hunt targets and secure objectives, then reach at least level 13 before Groudon spawns for a fully-upgraded moveset.

Position aggressively during objective fights—your crowd control can single-handedly turn teamfights by removing enemy carries from the equation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I focus on farming or fighting in the early game with Dhelmise?

Prioritize farming until level 7 when you have access to both moves. Dhelmise’s early game presence is relatively weak with only one ability unlocked, making extended fights risky. Focus on clearing wild Pokemon efficiently, especially Indeedees at bottom lane since they provide substantial experience. Once you hit level 5 and unlock your first move, you can start applying pressure, but avoid committing to all-in fights without your full combo available. Save your aggression for level 7 onwards when Anchor Shot plus your second move creates genuine kill pressure. During this farming phase, coordinate with your lane partner to secure Altaria and Swablus spawns, as these provide crucial experience toward your power spikes. If the enemy overextends or fights near your goal zone, capitalize on the defensive advantage, but generally respect that Dhelmise scales better into mid-game teamfights than early skirmishes.

Which moveset is better for ranked play—Power Whip or Whirlpool?

Power Whip is generally superior for ranked play due to its superior crowd control and burst potential. The edge stun on Power Whip can completely remove priority targets from teamfights, creating 4v5 advantages during crucial objective contests. This makes it invaluable during Regieleki, Registeel, and Groudon fights where eliminating even one enemy drastically improves your team’s chances. Whirlpool offers higher sustained damage and better cooldown management, making it excellent for extended brawls, but lacks the game-changing lockdown that wins objective fights. In coordinated ranked matches, having reliable stun combos (Anchor Shot into Power Whip) allows your teammates to follow up with their own damage and crowd control, creating devastating chain effects. However, if your team already has excessive crowd control from Pokemon like Snorlax or Mr. Mime, Whirlpool’s consistent DPS might fill a damage gap more effectively. Assess your team composition during selection—go Power Whip when your team needs lockdown, Whirlpool when you need sustained damage output.
