Kolkata: The Grand Beginning

Kolkata, India’s football capital, receives the honor of hosting Messi for the longest leg—nearly two full days. The city where Messi last played in 2011 during Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Venezuela is pulling out all stops for his return.

Highlights include:

Cultural Fusion: A special food and tea festival combining Argentine mate with Indian Assam tea, alongside authentic Bengali delicacies including hilsa fish and traditional sweets
Statue Unveiling: A massive 70-foot statue at Lake Town Sribhumi
Fan Mural: A 25×20 ft mural created during Durga Puja festivities, allowing fans to paint messages that will be presented to Messi
Celebrity Match: The GOAT Cup featuring Messi alongside Indian legends Sourav Ganguly, Bhaichung Bhutia, Leander Paes, and John Abraham

Ahmedabad & Mumbai: Elite Events

On December 13 evening, Messi travels to Ahmedabad for a private event hosted by the Adani Foundation at Shantigram, showcasing India’s business elite’s enthusiasm for the football icon.

Mumbai’s December 14 schedule promises Bollywood glamour meeting football royalty. The Mumbai Padel GOAT Cup will feature Messi playing his favorite sport alongside potential appearances from Shah Rukh Khan, Ranveer Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni. This unique crossover of cricket and football legends represents the tour’s cultural significance beyond sport.

New Delhi: The Grand Finale

The tour culminates in India’s capital on December 15 with a meeting between Messi and Prime Minister Modi—a rare high-level interaction underscoring the visit’s national importance. The Delhi District Cricket Association has invited cricket stars Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill (a self-confessed Messi fan) to participate in the final GOAT Cup at Feroz Shah Kotla.

According to the official FIFA website, such high-profile football ambassador visits play crucial roles in developing the sport in emerging markets like India.

What Makes This Tour Special?

Culture: Food festivals, statue unveilings, and cultural exchanges
Youth Development: Football masterclasses and clinics for NGO children
Social Impact: Charitable initiatives throughout the tour

Promoter Satadru Dutta emphasized the tour’s purpose: “It’s not going to bring about a revolution in Indian football, but rather, it’s an effort to promote the game. If it helps inspire even some of these children to take up the game seriously, it’s good enough.”

The Bigger Picture

Messi’s GOAT Tour comes as Argentina is also scheduled to play a friendly match in Kerala in November 2025, though Messi’s participation in that match remains uncertain. According to the Argentine Football Association, the team will play in Kerala between November 10-18 during the FIFA international window.

For Indian football, Messi’s visit represents validation of the country’s growing sports infrastructure and passion for the beautiful game. It’s a recognition that India—with its 1.4 billion people and expanding middle class—represents a crucial market for global football’s future.

Lionel Messi’s GOAT Tour of India 2025 transcends ordinary sporting events.
