’72 Hours’ Review: Kevin Hart’s Bachelor Party Comedy Doesn’t Quite Land

Netflix’s original comedies have had a rocky track record, and Kevin Hart’s latest addition, 72 Hours, doesn’t do much to break that pattern. Despite reuniting with longtime collaborator Tim Story and bringing in Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg to write it, the film struggles to recapture the chaotic charm of the “wild weekend gone wrong” genre it’s clearly chasing.

What’s the Story of 72 Hours?

Hart plays Joe, a 40-year-old advertising executive accidentally added to a group chat of four twenty-somethings planning a bachelor party in Miami. What follows is a fairly shaky premise — Joe ends up bankrolling their weekend, hopping on yachts, and getting tangled in escalating chaos that includes a deserted island, a jellyfish sting, bachelorette party criminals, and even a drug kingpin kidnapping. The film clearly wants to channel the spirit of The Hangover and Girls Trip, but never quite finds the same chemistry or comic rhythm that made those films work.

Where 72 Hours does land is in its smaller character beats rather than its big set pieces. Supporting cast members like Zach Cherry and SNL alum Ben Marshall bring genuinely funny, subtle moments that outshine the film’s more chaotic, gross-out attempts at humor. Marshall in particular stands out as the story’s MVP, playing a recently heartbroken friend with sharp, memorable one-liners throughout.

Should You Watch It?

If you’re a die-hard Kevin Hart fan, 72 Hours might still scratch that itch, but it falls short of being a standout entry in either his filmography or the genre it’s trying to revive.
