Cricket has a reputation as one of the more tradition-bound sports out there, but scratch the surface, and it’s actually been quietly aggressive about adopting new technology, especially over the last two decades. Before diving into the gadgets themselves, it’s worth saying that all this tech has also reshaped how fans engage with cricket betting odds. Ball-by-ball data feeds and instant replays give bettors far more information in real time than they had even ten years ago.

Here are seven innovations that have changed how the game is played, officiated and watched.

1. Hawk-Eye

Hawk-Eye is the obvious place to start. Developed by Dr Paul Hawkins and first used in cricket during a Test between Pakistan and England at Lord’s in April 2001, it uses six or more high-speed cameras to track a ball’s path and build a 3D reconstruction of its trajectory, which is what makes those now-iconic LBW graphics possible.

2. UltraEdge

UltraEdge is the technology working alongside it, using highly sensitive microphones to pick up the faint sound of bat or pad making contact with the ball. It effectively replaced the older Snickometer and gives third umpires a waveform to check against the vision.

3. Hot Spot

Hot Spot adds a third layer, using infrared cameras to detect the heat generated by friction when bat meets ball, showing up as a small white mark even when no clear sound is picked up. It’s used less often than UltraEdge these days, largely down to cost, but it remains a useful backup during DRS reviews.

4. DRS (Decision Review System)

Speaking of DRS, the Decision Review System itself, introduced in 2008 and trialled first in a Test series between Sri Lanka and India, ties Hawk-Eye, UltraEdge and Hot Spot together into a single process that lets players challenge on-field umpiring calls. Each team gets a limited number of unsuccessful reviews per innings, which adds its own layer of strategy, since captains have to weigh how confident they are before burning a review on a marginal decision.

5. Spidercam

Spidercam has changed the viewing experience rather than the officiating side, offering aerial shots suspended on wires above the ground that give broadcasters dynamic, moving perspectives no fixed camera could manage.

6. LED Bails and Stumps

LED bails and stumps are a simpler but effective addition, lighting up the instant they’re dislodged, which makes run-outs and stumpings far easier to call correctly in real time.

7. GPS and Motion Sensors

Finally, GPS chips and motion sensors embedded in bats, balls and player kits now feed data on bat speed, swing and player workload straight to broadcasters and coaching staff, adding a layer of analysis that simply didn’t exist a generation ago. Combined with wearable tracking, coaches can now flag fatigue in a fast bowler’s action well before it shows up as a dip in pace on the speed gun.

Between all of these systems, cricket has gone from a game decided almost entirely by an umpire’s eye to one where technology quietly backs up nearly every contentious call. It’s a shift that’s also made the sport more engaging to follow for fans checking cricket betting odds mid-match, since the data behind every review is now visible on screen rather than hidden in an umpire’s head. TechnoSports’ own coverage of Virat Kohli’s chase for his 80th international century is a good example of how tech-driven stats now shape even the biggest individual storylines in the sport.
