Top 5 Most Expensive Transfers in Football History till September 2026

Most Expensive Transfers in Football: The transfer market has officially been rewritten. On deadline day of the 2026 summer window, Enzo Fernández’s move from Chelsea to Manchester City sent shockwaves through world football, muscling into the top three most expensive transfers ever recorded. With numbers now touching the €200M+ mark regularly, here’s a breakdown of the five biggest-money deals in the sport’s history — and whether the players actually delivered.

Top 5 Most Expensive Transfers in Football History

1. Neymar Jr. — Barcelona to PSG (€222M)

Nearly a decade later, Neymar’s move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 remains untouched at the top of the charts. The fee more than doubled the previous world record overnight and fundamentally reshaped how clubs valued elite talent. Neymar delivered flashes of brilliance and silverware in France, but chronic injuries meant PSG never got the Champions League triumph they paid for. Still, nearly nine years on, nobody has come close to dethroning this deal. You can track live valuation data on Transfermarkt.

2. Kylian Mbappé — Monaco to PSG (€180M)

Signed as a teenager in 2017, Mbappé’s move looks like an absolute bargain in hindsight. He went on to become one of the most decorated forwards in Ligue 1 history before eventually moving to Real Madrid, cementing his transfer as one of the smartest big-money gambles in football history.

3. Enzo Fernández — Chelsea to Manchester City (€145M) 🆕

The freshest entry on this list. Fernández, a World Cup winner and Argentina’s midfield general, completed a dramatic deadline-day move from Chelsea to Manchester City. The deal matches the Premier League transfer record and makes Fernández the only player in history to be sold twice for fees exceeding €100M — first from Benfica to Chelsea in 2023, and now this. It’s officially the biggest signing in Manchester City’s club history.

4. Alexander Isak — Newcastle to Liverpool (€145M)

Isak’s move to Anfield last year broke the British transfer record at the time and set the benchmark that Fernández has now matched. Known for his clinical finishing and elegant hold-up play, Isak has quickly become central to Liverpool’s attacking identity, making this fee look increasingly justified with every passing month.

5. Morgan Rogers — Aston Villa to Chelsea (€138M)

Rounding out the top five is Morgan Rogers, whose breakout performances at Aston Villa convinced Chelsea to make him one of the most expensive English players ever sold domestically. It’s a bold bet on potential, and one that’s added fresh fuel to the Premier League’s already overheated spending frenzy.

The Bigger Picture

Four of the current top five transfers have happened within the last two years — a clear sign of how aggressively the Premier League is now spending compared to Europe’s other top leagues. With broadcast revenue climbing and state-backed ownership models spreading, don’t expect Neymar’s record to stand forever.
