The Game Awards 2022 achieved a new record for total viewership across all platforms where the ceremony was broadcast. Geoff Keighley tweeted hours after the presentation that The Game Awards 2022 may have already smashed previous records, and now the official viewership numbers have been announced.
The show is regarded as one of the best in recent years by fans and video game chat shows. Everything else surrounding the program was just as fascinating as the Game of the Year category, which came down to a two-horse race. The show also held several giveaways on some of its streaming platforms, such as Twitch and Steam, which helped attract even more viewers. The Game Awards’ efforts to incentivize viewership came off, as they outperformed expectations.
The Game Awards revealed that the 2022 ceremony had 103 million global Livestream viewers across 30 different streaming platforms.
Geoff Keighley deserves credit for making the show as accessible as possible. This is a 21% increase in viewership over the previous year. According to The Game Awards’ website, Twitter saw a peak of 11.5 million watchers and a 28% increase in conversation volume over the previous year, which could have been boosted by the bizarre incident at the end of The Game Awards 2022. During that time, #TheGameAwards soared to the top of Trending Topics, and hashtag usage increased by 31% from 2021.
The Game Awards’ YouTube Channel had 603,000 concurrent views, with the rest coming from various partners and channels co-streaming the event. 9.5 million unique customers watched the performance on Steam, hoping to win the Steam Deck offer for Steam users. Twitch had 1.9 million concurrent viewers across all platforms, including co-stream partners, representing a 20% increase from 2021. The Game Awards Twitch channel had 571,000 concurrent viewers at its peak.
Viewership spread to additional platforms such as TikTok Live, Instagram Live, Livestream partners in other countries such as China and India, and The IMAX Experience in theatres worldwide. The specifics of such figures were not disclosed. With game reveals of Hades 2, Armored Core 6, Death Stranding 2, and others, as well as moments like Christopher Judge’s extended acceptance speech for Best Performance, and the emergence of Pedro Eustache aka “Flute Guy” as a community darling, the program provided its noteworthy highlights.
The Game Awards have already been confirmed to return in 2023 to commemorate its tenth anniversary, and Geoff Keighley has made 2023 his busiest year yet. In June 2023, the Hollywood Bowl will host a live symphonic event showcasing music from games highlighted during the year. That will also be around the time he holds his Summer Game Fest event, which will take place in conjunction with or shortly after the return of E3 that month.
