Premier League approves Todd Boehly as the new owner of Chelsea in a £4.25bn takeover

Todd Boehly’s consortium has been approved by the Premier League after they passed their owners and directors tests. The government is now expected to give the green signal on the sale before it is completed.

Here is what the Premier League revealed in a statement about the new owners of Chelsea:

“The purchase remains subject to the Government issuing the required sale licence and the satisfactory completion of the final stages of the transaction,” read the statement.

“The Board has applied the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test (OADT) to all prospective Directors, and undertaken the necessary due diligence.”

“The members of the Consortium purchasing the club are affiliates of the Clearlake Capital Group, L.P., Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter.”

Chelsea FC will now work with the relevant Governments to secure the necessary licences to complete the takeover.”

The LA Dodgers owner has been seen at Stamford Bridge for several games. He has also met men’s and women’s first team coaches Thomas Tuchel and Emma Hayes at their training grounds.

It seems likely that he will be helping the club retain their winning mentality that was established under Roman Abramovich. Following the sale of the club, the first transfer window under the American will be very important.

Several new players are needed to bolster the first team, and contracts of key players need to be re-negotiated so that they are kept at the club. All in all, the Premier League approval is a huge step that all but confirms Boehly as the new owner of the club.
