Monitor Sales boom to die down in 2022

According to a market research estimate, 2021 was the best year in recent history for PC monitor shipments. Last year, 143.6 million PC displays were shipped, according to Jon Peddie Research and IDC. You’d have to go back to 2012 to see a higher amount if you looked at the calendar. Demand for monitors was originally strong in 2021, but as the year progressed, things began to deteriorate.

Overall, monitor shipments for 2021 exceeded estimates, increasing by 5.0 percent year over year. The first half of 2021 should have been much better for monitor makers, with a growth of 19.4 percent, but a hard second half of the year stifled industry optimism. On the consumer side, the shift in mood was particularly obvious. Shipments were down 5.2 percent year over year in Q4 2021.

First and foremost, it is vital to note that 2021 got off to a strong start, marking the apex of shipment figures in a period of continuous expansion that began in 2018. Yes, the era of expansion closely corresponds to the pandemic’s big lockdowns and WFH movement. Many countries avoided pandemic lockdowns and other viral mitigation measures as 2021 came to a close.

Adoption of Windows 10 by enterprises aided monitoring growth from 2018 to 2021

However, we may have to wait until 2025 to see a repetition of this phenomenon following the release of Windows 11. Finally, market analysts believe that monitor purchases began to drop midway through 2021 as a result of market saturation. Gaming monitors were not specifically mentioned in this study.

The shift in Q4 2021 was very negative. We’re seeing pandemic repercussions again, but this time on the supply side of the supply/demand equation. As Covid variations became increasingly transmissible, it is thought that China, in particular, has continued to strengthen lockdowns as it pursued zero-Covid. This affected not only production but also freight and shipment. As a result, only Dell and Lenovo experienced growth in Q4 2021.

Looking even further ahead, market analysts predict that shipments will remain flat from 2023 to 2026. It will be intriguing to watch what trend or phenomenon triggers the monitor industry’s next growth spurt.
