It seems NVIDIA is taking some inspiration from AMD as they are about to implement a new mode in its already famous tech DLSS. It is said to release a new version of DLSS i.e. 2.2.9.0 where we could see a new “Ultra Quality” mode, similar to AMD’s.

The mode has been listed as a placeholder in the UE5 documention and as per the footnotes, it should not be visible to end-users. This implies that this new Ultra Quality mode is still under development which will be a welcoming upgrade over the already available Quality Preset.

The currently available in DLSS supported titles at Quality mode renders the game at 66.6% of native resolution or upscales the resolution 1.5x times. This change of bringing a new Ultra Quality mode will be a direct answer to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution.

Currently, AMD’s FSR renders games at 77% resolution using ‘Ultra Quality’ mode. However, it would be interesting to compare both DLSS and FSR in a single game which would give a more accurate idea as to which super-resolution technique is the best, but there are no games that implement both the techniques.

Not only this but it was also unearthed that this new version of DLSS is already present in Unreal Engine 5 while the latest DLSS 2.2.6.0 brings support to Rainbow Six Siege or Lego Builder’s Journey. Interesting to see even though the new 2.2.9.0 version has not been tested or formally rolled, here’s a quick comparison has already been shared by Alexander Battaglia from Digital Foundry:
