Within the last few months, there have been numerous reports of Apple facing delays in the development of its own 2020 iPhone models as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. It looks like Apple is attempting to reduce the delay and start the new iPhones sooner than anticipated by pushing ahead with mass production along its supply chain.

Usually, the iPhone’s product development and testing happen early in the year. But this year with travel constraints and security concerns, Apple’s engineers were not able to go to China to confirm and test many elements for the new iPhones. This delayed the whole schedule by a month or two, leading many to speculate a long delay from the launch of the phone.ย

The 2020 iPhones will be Apple’s first 5G smartphones, using Qualcomm’s X60 5G modem, which makes it an essential device in its rivalry against Samsung and Huawei, who’ve already released 5G devices earlier this year. Apple is now attempting to cut down delays along the supply chain to be able to ensure the launch doesn’t get delayed too much.

They’re predicting their demand will not be impacted by the pandemic, which is evident from their 80 million units target for the 2020 iPhone models. New orders for older models of the iPhone also have been made, to maintain the revenue momentum, in case the 2020 iPhones go further delayed.ย

A source commented, “What the progress looks like now is months of delay in terms of mass production, but Apple is doing everything it can to shorten the postponement. Thereโ€™s a chance that the schedule could still be moved ahead.โ€

Maybe this is the reason why this time leaks suggest that there will be separate 4G and 5G versions of the iPhone 12 series and can start at an ultra-low price of $549. So, Apple could launch the new iPhone 12 series at the same time every year and make 4G phones available first then take some time to make available the 5G ones.
