After Manchester United reached an agreement with Shandong Luneng, Fellaini has already passed a medical and will sign a three-year deal.
Marouane Fellaini has struggled for game time since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. He was a key player under Jose Mourinho and signed a new deal until 2020, with the option of another year, in the summer. The caretaker boss has relied on the Belgium international a lot less than his predecessor.
Fellaini has only featured for 3 minutes in the Premier League under the Norwegian and was a second-half substitute in United’s third-round FA Cup victory over Reading.
Although a calf injury has ruled him out of recent matches.
The Belgian posted a photograph to his Instagram from Brussels airport on Thursday morning.
Solskjaer said at the start of the week that he did not expect any United exits before Thursday’s English transfer deadline and was coy about the Belgium international’s future following Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley.
Asked if there was anything he could say on Fellaini, the caretaker manager said: “To be honest, no. I’ve been busy all day and I don’t really know the latest update on that one. Just wait and see.”
Fellaini’s exit looms just a matter of weeks after Solskjaer bemoaned the absence of the injured midfielder and his “X factor”.
Fellaini’s current club Manchester United are expected to receive around £7m for his services.
The Chinese transfer window doesn’t close until 28 February but Shandong Luneng are reportedly hoping to complete the deal as quickly as possible in order to avoid potential disruptions during next week’s Chinese New Year.
The deal is subject to paperwork but it seems Fellaini’s five-and-a-half year stay at Old Trafford is as good as over.
