11th Gen Intel Tiger Lake-H mobile gaming processors confirmed

Its been just a few days since Intel launched its revolutionary Tiger Lake U series mobile CPUs with the revolutionary Intel Xe graphics, now, its H series gaming CPUs have also been confirmed. Intel’s Boyd Phelps, Corporate Vice President of Client Computing Group announced this via Medium.

This should give a significant boost to Intel’s gaming line of processors, however, they will be coming in 2021. Still, a lot of insights have been shared about there CPUs whose TDP will be in the range of 35-45W and the max number of cores offered will be 8 cores.

Performance

Much like its brothers with 15-25W TDPs, these gaming processors will also be based out of the 10nm process and use the SuperFin transistors for better performance and efficiency. Tiger Lake now offers a re-designed middle-level cache of 1.25 MB along with high clock speeds even at the lower thermal envelope.

All you need to know about Intel's new 10nm SuperFin Transistor

So, there will be lot of new features shared by the Tiger Lake family including Thunderbolt™ 4, PCIe Gen4 for direct-attached SSD, and support for multiple double data rate (DDR) technologies from LP4, DDR4, to LP5 and larger caches. The use of Willow Cove cores helps to get a good amount of IPC uplift from last-gen and much higher single-core and all-core turbo frequencies.

Intel has also added also a 3MB non-inclusive last-level-cache (LLC) per core slice. A single core workload gets access to the 12MB of LLC in the 4-core die while up to a massive 24MB in the 8-core die configuration, that boost frequency even further.

Efficiency

Well, one of the biggest concerns with the 10th Gen Comet Lake-H series was the inefficient 14nm cores that drew a lot more power and used to get hot.

However, with Tiger Lake-H CPUs, things are about to change as Intel promises to deliver an increase in battery life, the improved voltage at a frequency in every domain, autonomous dynamic voltage frequency scaling to the high-speed fabric and memory subsystems. I like this effort personally and if this quote by Intel really comes true then it will be great:

“People will enjoy improved performance and a better experience on nearly every key battery life workloads, such as 4K video playback and browsing.

Speeds and feeds are great, but the full experience is enhanced. People will enjoy better system responsiveness, instant resume time, and long battery life throughout their day with minimal disruption, in sleek, modern form factors.”

This kind of approach by the business-minded Intel can bring a smile to a lot of enthusiasts out there. However, this approach should have been taken a lot earlier, at least they would not have lost Apple then, thanks to AMD that has driven Intel to go down this road.

Graphics

Intel will still equip these CPUs with their own Xe graphics based on their new Xe-LP architecture that has increased the execution unit (EU) count from 64 to 96. Already these iGPUs have shown great performance when it comes to gaming or benchmarks and should enable even better performance on a higher TDP chip. Intel even promising 1080p, 30 FPS experience on popular, top-tier titles, and even more.

Tiger Lake-H will also support up to four concurrent 4k60 HDR displays and can easily support emergent 8K resolution displays. These CPUs come with the first IPU generation with an imaging pipeline fully implemented in hardware. So, Intel will provide support of 4K30 video and 27 megapixels still image with the architectural capability to scale in the future to as high as 4K90 and 42 megapixels.

I/O, Connectivity & AI

These new 10nm based gaming processors will also bring a lot of I/O and connectivity improvements as well including multiple Type-C integrated ports supporting Thunderbolt 4, USB4, PCIe, and multiple display ports. These processors will support faster RAM speeds of LP4–4267 and DDR4–3200 along with LP5–5400 support when it arrives in 2021.

Intel Tiger Lake lineup for laptops announced: up to 4.8GHz turbo confirmed

Intel’s WI-FI-6 (802.11ax) will come integrated on the chip die itself, enabling 3x higher peak data rates and up to 4x capacity improvement over the prior standard. Interesting features like audio, voice, and speech recognition will find space and help enable USB or BT audio offload.

Also, there is an upgraded wake on voice capability that not only supports Cortana and Alexa voice assistants but also aligning with Microsoft speech standard multi-voice assistant. The Tiger lake PCH has integrated 4th generation converged security and manageability engine to ensure the security of laptops.

The new GNA 2.0 engine allows multiple AI capabilities like efficient speech recognition, dictation, and noise cancellation with low power consumption. The new Willow Cove cores support the vector neural network instructions for general-purpose AI programming at even greater efficiency than last-gen.

Overall, on paper the upcoming 11th Gen Intel Tiger Lake-H mobile gaming processors looks very promising and I like the fact Intel has skipped Ice Lake used its much improved Tiger Lake for their next gen gaming processors. Finally in 2021 we might see even more improved Intel gaming laptops with mobile GeForce RTX 30 GPUs.

While from AMD you could expect Radeon RX 6000M series (RDNA2 based) GPUs and Ryzen 5000H Cezanne APUs, honestly I am looking forward to 2021 as a great leap in mobile coming computing! Do leave your thoughts in the comments down below…😉
