1 Mark, One PG Medical Seat — Hyderabad’s NEET-PG Shocker Explained

Imagine scoring just 1 out of 800 marks — and still walking away with a postgraduate medical seat. It sounds impossible, but it just happened in Hyderabad, and it’s raising serious questions about India’s PG medical admissions.

What Exactly Happened?

According to counselling data released by the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), 20 candidates who scored between just 1 and 99 marks in NEET-PG have been allotted postgraduate medical seats across Telangana. The most extreme case: a candidate with an All India Rank of 2,29,981 — who scored a single mark — secured an MS Orthopaedics seat at Kamineni Academy of Medical Sciences under the ST category, through the Competent Authority Quota mop-up round.

It’s Not Just Private Colleges

Here’s the twist — at least 12 of these 20 low-score allotments went to government medical colleges, including some of Telangana’s most reputed institutions.

Osmania Medical College alone accounted for six such admissions — including MD Forensic Medicine at just 12 marks and MD Pathology at 24 marks. Gandhi Medical College in Secunderabad admitted three candidates with scores between 59 and 91. Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal saw a 32-mark candidate secure an MD Pathology seat.

Why Is This Happening?

Earlier this year, the Union health ministry and NBEMS lowered the NEET-PG qualifying percentile to fill thousands of vacant PG seats nationwide. While this opened doors for many, it also let in candidates with extremely low — even negative — scores in some reserved categories. Authorities have defended the move, arguing it was the only practical way to avoid empty seats.
