1 Ladakh FC is the first-ever professional football club in the picturesque state of Ladakh. Located at an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level, the club is chasing green goals off-the-field, aiming to be the cleanest and greenest club in India, with a target to attain Net Zero Carbon by 2025.
Here’s everything you need to know about the club: 1 Ladakh FC
- Eco-Friendly Kit: The players will wear an eco-friendly kit manufactured by Danish brand Hummel. It has a dry-dye concept with zero water consumption and zero waste-water discharges. This will reduce energy consumption by 50 per cent.
- Cycling to Training Ground: The entire squad will have to cycle from the hotel to their training ground in Leh. This is part of the team’s zero plastic policy.
- Customized Aluminum Water Bottles: As part of their Zero Plastic policy, all the players will have their customized aluminum water bottles which they will have to carry everywhere they go.
- Participation in Green Initiatives: As part of their contracts, players will have to participate in initiatives such as cleaning rivulets and community awareness programs in Ladakh.

- Home Advantage: Scouting local players, the club aims to have a natural advantage over visiting teams, for whom playing at a high altitude will be a big challenge. Oxygen levels are at an average of 65 per cent and can drop even lower, making it very difficult for people to breathe.
- Green Sponsorship: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has joined the sustainability cause as the chief sponsor, while Danish brand Hummel has taken the role of eco-friendly kit sponsor.
- Football in Ladakh: Ladakh has received a massive boost in football in the past year. Its first step was being affiliated with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in February last year. Women’s football isn’t far behind.
- League Participation: From May this year, the Ladakh Football Association will start a league in both their districts – Leh and Kargil – and the winner should get into the 2nd Division of the I-League.
- Unique Idea: For the trials of the team, the club is going to call on all the ice hockey players and those who compete in winter sports.
- Green Initiative: “Steps like these will form a very important stepping stone in our plan to become the cleanest and greenest club in India, with a target to attain Net Zero Carbon by 2025,” said the club on Twitter. The goal is to set an example for other clubs across the country.
