Zomato has officially launched the ‘District’ app, designed to revolutionize the “going-out” experience for users. Zomato Unveils ‘District’ App to Enhance Dining and Live Event Experiences

This is Zomato’s third big consumer vertical after its food delivery platform and the quick-commerce offering of Blinkit, which it also operates. Launched amid Zomato’s recent acquisition of Paytm business entertainment and ticketing space in a ₹2,048.4 crore ($244 million) deal, this move further cements the food babe turned delivery king’s intent to enter the entertainment sector.

Zomato chief executive Deepinder Goyal explained the company’s vision for the District in a Q1 FY25 shareholder letter. “Zomato and Blinkit are our two large consumer businesses serving customers at home, but we also have one of India’s largest ‘going-out’ businesses,” he stated. Goyal emphasized the potential of the new app, describing it as a “game-changer” for integrating various use cases into a unified platform.

District app is an extension that works on top of Zomato’s existing dining-out products, which operate at a $500 million annualized gross order value (GOV). The app now aims to rival incumbents like Reliance-backed BookMyShow and adds event, movie, and sports ticketing. Despite entering a crowded market, Zomato aims to differentiate itself by combining entertainment and dining in one app. Zomato disclosed in its Q2 FY25 earnings report that it plans to raise ₹8,500 crore via a qualified institutional placement (QIP) to fortify its balance sheet for this growth.

Zomato also announced a sustainability initiative that addresses food wastage by offering food orders that have been canceled at cheaper prices. The feature ensures that customers and the environment, with nearly 4 lakh cancellations done every month. Through the District app, Zomato is going to push urban entertainment and dining in a new direction while solidifying its already strong hand at many of our lifestyle spaces, to help solve all those sustainability challenges as well.
