How Scam Detection Works

When you receive a suspicious message, activate Circle to Search by long-pressing your home button or navigation bar. Circle the questionable text, and Google’s AI will analyze it against web information to determine if it’s likely fraudulent.

The system provides an AI-powered overview with guidance and insights including suggested next steps, helping users make informed decisions without switching apps. This real-time analysis examines common scam patterns like fake delivery alerts, bank warnings, or payment requests.

Why This Matters Now

As more malicious actors access latest AI models, scams are evolving in subtlety, making them harder to detect manually. Fraudulent messages increasingly mimic legitimate communications, tricking even cautious users into clicking risky links or sharing personal information.

The feature will show up only when the system has strong confidence that the message needs attention, ensuring accurate results. Google emphasizes that while helpful, users shouldn’t rely solely on AI guidance and should maintain personal caution.

Available Through Multiple Methods

Beyond Circle to Search, Google Lens offers identical functionality. Take a screenshot of suspicious content, upload it to Google Lens via the Google app, and receive the same AI-powered scam analysis—available on both Android and iOS devices.

Additional Android Security Updates

Google is also introducing “Urgent” Call Reason in the Phone app, allowing users to mark outgoing calls as urgent. The Messages app now alerts users when unknown numbers invite them to group chats, with options to leave and report suspicious groups.
