Every couple of years, India’s telecom giants remind users that cheap data doesn’t last forever. This time, the signs point to another hike landing sooner than most people expect.

What’s Being Reported for Mobile Recharge ?

Jio, Airtel, and Vi are likely to increase prepaid plan prices by up to 15% in the next 3 to 4 months, marking the industry’s first major tariff change in two years. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio’s next tariff hike is expected to take place in the same window, with prices rising by up to 15%.

Why This Is Happening Now

The move aims to boost revenue as data usage grows while earnings stay flat, with the three private operators facing slow growth in Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). Most current growth comes from 2G to 4G/5G migration rather than actual price increases, pushing companies to raise prices to improve real income.

Reliance Jio’s planned IPO in the first half of 2026 is also emerging as a key trigger for the next round of tariff hikes, according to a sector report by JM Financial Institutional Securities, which believes the IPO timeline has materially improved the visibility of a fresh 15% tariff hike in the coming months.

How The Hike Might Actually Work

This won’t necessarily be a simple across-the-board price bump. Experts say the hike will likely change the pricing structure itself, moving toward a usage-based model where users who consume more data pay more, helping companies improve margins.

A recent sector report by Axis Capital projects a more moderate 10% to 12% increase over the next three to six months, suggesting this round may be more calculated compared to previous steep hikes.

What’s Already Changed

Telcos have been quietly adjusting pricing well before any formal announcement. Earlier in 2026, Airtel hiked the price of its Rs 859 prepaid plan to Rs 899 and silently removed cheaper plans like Rs 799 and Rs 249.Jio, meanwhile, has been introducing newer higher-value plans targeting increased ARPU, including OTT bundles and mega content packs, rather than directly raising existing prices.

With India’s telecom sector now dominated by just three major private players, pricing power has shifted significantly compared to the competitive era of telecommunications in India a decade ago.
