Your Face Is Now Your Backup Password, Says Google

Locked out of your Google Account with no phone, no passkey, and no patience left? Google’s new “selfie video” sign-in wants to be the last resort that actually works — all it needs is your face and a few head turns.

What Google Just Launched

Announced today, selfie video is a new backup way to get back into your Google Account when your usual phone or computer isn’t within reach. It joins existing options like recovery emails, phone numbers, and passkeys as one more layer of protection in an increasingly password-less world — a shift TechnoSports has been tracking closely in its tech security coverage.

How It Actually Works

Setting it up is simple: head to Security & sign-in in your Google Account, choose “Selfie video,” and follow the guided prompts. You’ll look into the camera and perform a few short head movements so Google can capture multiple angles of your face. No camera on your desktop? No problem — a QR code lets you finish the process on your phone instead.

Later, if you’re ever locked out, you just record a fresh video. Google compares it against your saved one and asks you to repeat simple movements — a liveness check meant to prove it’s really you live on camera, not a static photo or a recycled clip.

Why the Timing Matters

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. Deepfake technology has made impersonation easier than ever, with scammers increasingly using synthetic identities to pass background checks and slip into accounts undetected. Google says it’s layered in defenses against exactly this kind of spoofing.

Google’s Old Recovery Methods vs. Selfie Video

Who Can’t Use It Yet

The feature won’t be available to everyone at launch — Google Workspace accounts, child accounts, and accounts under Advanced Protection are excluded for now.

Bottom Line

Selfie video won’t replace your existing sign-in methods, but it’s a smart safety net for the moments when everything else fails. You can set it up today at g.co/signin-selfie.
