Sergi Roberto is set to renew his contract until June 2024, with his current one set to expire at the end of 22/23. The Spaniard is a La Masia academy graduate, and has now spent ten years with the first team, having been promoted officially in 2013.
Xavi Hernandez was key to the versatile player extending his stay at the club. He has been used as a right-back, a central midfielder and a winger during his time at the club. Xavi prefers the 31-year-old in a more attacking role, and he has scored three goals and provided as many assists in 22 games across all competitions.
Sergi Roberto to continue with Barcelona: Xavi key to extension
“Sergi always performs in different positions. The criticism of him has been really unfair, among the worst I have seen in my career,” Xavi said about Sergi Roberto.
“This is a player who’s come through at the club. He performs wherever he plays, he never complains, he’s a tremendous captain, selfless, loves the club…
“I have blind faith in him.”
As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, the player has agreed to renew his contract two weeks ago. It is now only a matter of time before his renewal is announced in the next few days.
Roberto is en route to winning another league title with the club, as Barcelona are currently nine points clear of second-placed Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table.
