Stunning 409 Players in the Fray: WPL 2023 Auction Takes Over with a 60 Crore ‘Money Shower’

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 auction is set to take place on Monday, February 13th, at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. A total of 409 women cricketers will be up for grabs as 5 newly drafted WPL teams fight for their share of the 60 crore ‘money shower’. The auction will start at 2:30 PM IST, with the live streaming available on the Jio Cinema app starting at 2 PM IST.

The rules of the WPL 2023 auction are as follows:

  1. Base Price:
  • The highest base price bracket is INR 50 Lakh, with 24 players including Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana.
  • The next bracket of INR 40 lakh features 30 players, including 8 from India.
  1. Squad Size:
  • Each team is allowed to fill a maximum of 90 slots, with a minimum of 15 and maximum of 18 players in their squad.
  1. Foreign Players Limit:
  • Teams can have up to 6 overseas players, with a maximum of 30 foreigners and 60 Indians in the inaugural season of WPL.
  1. Incentive for picking players from Associate Nations:
  • 8 players in the auction pool are from Associate Nations, and teams can have a fifth overseas player from an Associate nation provided they field 4 overseas players in their XIs.
  1. Break-up of players at the auction:
  • 28 players are from Australia, 27 from England, 23 from West Indies, 19 from New Zealand, 17 from South Africa, 15 from Sri Lanka, 11 from Zimbabwe, 9 from Bangladesh, 6 from Ireland, 4 from UAE, and 1 each from USA, Hong Kong, Netherlands and Thailand

  • Players such as Devine, Ecclestone, Gardner, Harmanpreet, Mandhana, Hayley Matthews, and Perry are expected to go for high amounts at the auction.

  • The youngest players at the auction are Shabnam MD, Sonam Yadav, and Vinny Suzan, all with a base price of INR 10 lakh and 15 years of age.
  • The oldest player in the auction is Latika Kumari, aged 41, with Marange close behind at 40.

The WPL 2023 auction will be broadcast on the Sports 18 Network channels, with Viacom 18 having acquired the rights to the WPL for the next 5 seasons.

The 5 teams participating in the WPL are the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriors. The Mumbai Indians are based in Mumbai and owned by Reliance Industries, with Charlotte Edwards as the head coach. The Royal Challengers Bangalore are based in Bengaluru and owned by Diageo. The Delhi Capitals are based in Delhi, owned by JSW Group-GMR Group, with Jonathan Batty as the head coach. The Gujarat Giants are based in Ahmedabad and owned by Adani Group, with Rachel Haynes as the head coach. The UP Warriors are based in Lucknow and owned by Capri Global, with Jon Lewis as the head coach.
