World Cup 2026: How Deniz Undav Played His Way Into Germany’s Starting XI

Two months ago, Julian Nagelsmann publicly criticised Deniz Undav in a post-match interview after the striker had scored a last-minute winner against Ghana in a friendly in Stuttgart. The German head coach rated the performance as “not good”, adding: “I didn’t think his performance today was good up until the goal. He touched the ball once, but he’s also a top striker because he’s in the right place at the right time. That’s what I meant. If he’s been running around for 70 minutes beforehand — I don’t know if he’d do it like that then.”

Those words sparked a public debate in Germany about whether that was the right way to treat the top-scoring German in Europe’s major leagues less than three months before the World Cup. They also suggested Nagelsmann did not see Undav as anything more than a late-game option off the bench.

A lot can change in a short space of time.

In the 4-0 win over Finland last Sunday, Undav scored twice and set up another. Nagelsmann’s post-match assessment could not have been more different: “I think Deniz was very dangerous and played a good game. If you score two goals and set up another, you’re not going to lose your spot on the team.”

That was as close to a guarantee of a starting role in Germany’s opener against Curaçao as you can get. And the statistics suggest he has earned every bit of it.

The Numbers That Made the Case

Among all players named in Germany’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, Undav was the most heavily involved in his club side’s goals throughout 2025-26. He finished as the second-highest scorer in the Bundesliga with 19 goals — only the prolific Harry Kane (36) scored more.

What makes that figure even more striking is that none of his 19 goals came from the penalty spot. He had just one penalty opportunity all season — missing it against Hamburger SV in April. Had he converted, he would have finished on 20 Bundesliga goals, only the second time in his career he would have reached that landmark, just behind his 26 goals for Union Saint-Gilloise in 2021-22.

His 122 shots across the season set a new Stuttgart club record in the recorded era (since 2004-05). Averaging 4.9 shots per 90 — more than any other Bundesliga player — Undav consistently found ways into scoring positions, often from harder angles than the game’s other leading scorers.

His xG per non-penalty shot of 0.13 was lower than Kane (0.17), Serhou Guirassy (0.19), Luis Díaz (0.17), and Patrik Schick (0.20) — yet he outperformed his non-penalty xG by 3.6 goals. He was not getting the easiest chances. He was simply making the most of the ones he got.

Over the last three Bundesliga seasons, Undav has scored 46 times for Stuttgart. Among all players in the German top flight since 2023-24, only Kane (98) and Guirassy (66) have scored more.

His Record Under Nagelsmann

Undav’s international record under Nagelsmann reinforces the case for his inclusion. With six goals and two assists across 342 minutes under the current head coach, he has averaged a goal or assist every 43 minutes — the best rate of any player with at least 200 minutes in that period.

Those eight goal involvements came largely from the bench. The Finland performance — two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win — was the moment that shifted Nagelsmann from reluctant critic to confirmed believer.

The Disconnect Between Form and Selection

The gap between Undav’s production and those around him in the German squad is stark. In terms of league goal involvements in 2025-26 across Europe’s top five leagues, Undav leads the German contingent by a significant margin.

The contrast is telling. Woltemade has seven starts for Germany since August 2025 despite 11 league goal involvements — fewer than half of Undav’s 25. Wirtz has nine starts with eight involvements. Havertz has two starts with five. Injuries to Havertz and Musiala have disrupted Nagelsmann’s options throughout the season, creating space for Undav that his numbers suggest he deserves.

The three German Premier League players — Woltemade (11), Wirtz (8), and Havertz (5) — have 24 league contributions combined this season. Undav has 25 on his own.

Solving Germany’s Most Persistent Problem

There is a specific historical context that makes Undav’s efficiency particularly valuable for Germany at this World Cup.

At Qatar 2022, Germany were eliminated in the group stage for the second consecutive tournament. It was not for lack of chances. They recorded the fourth-highest xG of any team (10.1) across their three matches — averaging 3.4 xG per 90, the highest of any nation in the tournament. They scored six goals. They underachieved their xG by 4.1 goals — the largest underperformance of all 32 teams.

A clinical striker who consistently outperforms expected goals is precisely what has been missing. Undav’s +3.6 non-penalty xG overperformance in 2025-26 is not a one-off. It is a pattern.

The Apology — and the Wife’s Advice

Nagelsmann’s public criticism after the Ghana game prompted an unusual follow-up. Shortly afterwards, he publicly retracted his comments:

“At that moment, I just let myself get a little carried away by all the questions on the same topic. It wasn’t right, and the tone was far too harsh for public consumption,” he said on the MagentaTV talk show series Bestbesetzung.

He then revealed that a conversation with his wife had led him to call Undav and apologise: “I told her I’d call him, and then she said, ‘Yes, that’s what I’d advise you to do.'”

His wife’s advice may well pay dividends for the German team this summer.

In Nagelsmann’s preferred 4-2-3-1, there are essentially two spots available for Undav — the number nine and the creative role directly behind the lone striker. His form in 2025-26 makes him the strongest German candidate for either position on the evidence of the numbers alone.

This is not a sentimental selection. It is a statistical one.
