Despite Smriti Mandhana’s decent knock of 52 off 41 balls, India lost to England in their third game at the group stage in the T20 World Cup. Richa Ghosh also contributed a smashing 47 off 34 balls, but it wasn’t enough to get India to cross the winning total.
India lose their first game in T20 World Cup against England by 11 runs
India has won their previous two games in the T20 World Cup in the group stage against West Indies and Pakistan. Unfortunately, the winning streak didn’t continue in the game against England on Saturday. The English defeated the Indian women by 11 runs in the game at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Saturday.
India came out to bat to chase a target of 152. Mandhana and Ghosh contributed a crucial 43-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Ghosh even thrashed a smacking 19-run in the last over with a four and a six. However, India couldn’t finish on the winning side.
India wrapped up for 140 for the loss of 5 wickets in all 20 overs.
After the defeat, India stands in 2nd position in Group B with four points in the cabinet in the T20 World Cup. England is at the top with six points after ensuring their third consecutive victory in the tournament.
England put a competitive score by batting first
Batting first, England put a competitive total of 151 runs on the board. Nat Sciver Brunt scored 50 off 42 deliveries, and Amy Jones smashed 40 off 27 balls.
India’s Renuka Thakur picked up his career-best five wickets in the inning. She picked wickets in each of her three overs within the power play and took two more in the concluding over to finish with five wickets conceding just 15 runs.
Though a good start, India failed to maintain consistency against the steady England bowling.
