First Collaboration Since Ocean’s Eleven and Burn After Reading
The psychological thriller “Wolfs” marks the first collaboration between Brad Pitt and George Clooney since their work on the Ocean’s Eleven series and Burn After Reading. As part of the movie’s promotional campaign, Sony has released a teaser featuring the pair’s reunion on screen.
A collaboration between Columbia Pictures and Apple Original Films, “Wolfs” features Clooney as “a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime,” according to the official synopsis. When a second fixer (Pitt) shows up, the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, leading to a night that spirals out of control in unexpected ways. The teaser trailer, showcases Clooney and Pitt sitting in a moving vehicle, enveloped in uncomfortable silence, tension, a squeaky windshield wiper, and Clooney’s thousand-yard death stare.
In addition to Pitt and Clooney, the cast includes Austin Abrams, Amy Ryan, and Poorna Jagannathan. Pitt and Clooney also serve as producers for their respective companies, Plan B Productions and Smokehouse Pictures. Apple won a bidding war against Sony, Lionsgate, and Netflix for the movie package, with Sony Pictures Releasing distributing the film. “Wolfs” is set to hit theaters on September 20th.
Filming and Production Insights on “Wolfs”
Filming for “Wolfs,” featuring A-list stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney, took place in New York City. The film, written and directed by Jon Watts, known for his work on the Spider-Man trilogy, also stars Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan, Poorna Jagannathan from “Never Have I Ever,” and Austin Abrams from “Euphoria.” Announced in 2021, “Wolfs” sparked an intense bidding war among multiple studios, with Apple TV Plus ultimately securing the rights, and Sony acquiring theatrical distribution rights.
In an interview with Total Film earlier this year, Clooney expressed his enthusiasm for the film: “It’s a really good movie. I love this guy, Jon Watts. What a director. It’s out there. We just did a screening of it, and the place kind of went batshit for it. So, we’re excited about it. We think it’s a really fun, dark – very dark – nutty film… It feels like an R-rated Ocean’s film.”
Though the film has yet to premiere, Clooney and Watts are optimistic about its success. Plans for a sequel are already in discussion. Speaking to Deadline last year, Clooney mentioned, “We’re already talking about a sequel for this film I did with Brad and Jon Watts. It was a great shoot, and Jon is an extraordinarily talented guy who’s also really joyful. He loves what he does. We had a blast doing it, and we’ve seen it. It’s an off-the-charts great film, and it’s fun to work with Brad again. We had a really good time.”
Clooney also highlighted the effort to secure a theatrical release for “Wolfs,” stating that he and Pitt “gave money back” to ensure this outcome.
He explained, “We met with David Zaslav, and he was like, ‘look, I think every movie we do will go to streaming, but we want it released first because there’s an actual benefit in having your movie out, be successful, be promoted, and it actually changes how many people watch it in streaming.’ Brad and I made the deal to do that movie where we gave money back to make sure that we had a theatrical release. At the time, that wasn’t as popular an opinion as it has become in the last year and a half now.”
Reflecting on the success of recent blockbusters, Clooney noted, “I think Netflix is considering buying theaters even, I’m not sure. But you look at ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie,’ and establishing them as massive box office hits makes them massive hits on streaming as well.”
Reunion of A-List Stars in “Wolfs”
“Wolfs” marks a reunion for Brad Pitt and George Clooney, who previously starred together in three “Ocean’s” movies and last shared the screen in 2008’s “Burn After Reading.” Pitt’s recent acting credits include Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” while Clooney recently reprised his role as Bruce Wayne in DC’s “The Flash.”
Austin Abrams is known for his roles in coming-of-age projects like “Euphoria,” “Dash and Lily,” “Do Revenge,” and “Chemical Hearts.” Amy Ryan has had an extensive career on stage and screen, recognized for her performances in “Gone Baby Gone,” “The Office,” “Beautiful Boy,” and numerous other projects. Poorna Jagannathan is notable for her matriarchal role in Mindy Kaling’s Netflix coming-of-age series “Never Have I Ever” and her appearance in the HBO miniseries “The Night Of,” among other titles.
Director Jon Watts is most renowned for directing the MCU “Spider-Man” films starring Tom Holland, including “Homecoming,” “Far From Home,” and “No Way Home,” all of which were massive box office successes. He also directed the films “Clown” and “Cop Car” and is behind the upcoming “Wolfs,” a highly anticipated collaboration between Columbia Pictures and Apple Original Films, set for release on September 20th.
“Wolfs” is set to premiere on September 20th, promising a thrilling collaboration between Clooney, Pitt, and Watts.
