Premier League winners Manchester City and FA Cup winners Liverpool will play the 2022 Community Shield on July 30. The English ‘super cup’ and curtain raiser will see two of the best teams in the country face off for the first piece of silverware available in the new season.

The match is usually played at Wembley Stadium, like the final of the FA Cup. But this year, it has been shifted to the King Power Stadium at Leicester – the home of former FA Cup champions Leicester City. This will be the 100th edition of the Community Shield, and has been brought forward to accommodate the winter World Cup.

The reason behind the change in venue is due to the Women’s European Championship final being held at Wembley the same weekend. As a result, a neutral venue has been chosen for the fans of both the clubs to travel to.

The last time the Community Shield was held away from Wembley Stadium was in 2012, when the finals of the Olympic football tournament was being held at the stadium. That year, Manchester City defeated Chelsea 3-2 in the finals to lift the Community Shield.

The curtain raiser has been played at the Millennium Stadium in the past. The Emirates Stadium and London Stadium were both pitched for the game, but ultimately, the King Power Stadium has been given the nod as it will be convenient for fans to travel to as well.
