Liverpool win FA Cup by defeating Chelsea 6-4 on penalties in Wembley repeat

Liverpool have won the 2022 FA Cup after beating Chelsea 5-6 on penalties at Wembley Stadium. Neither side was able to find the back of the net in 120 minutes, and the final of the competition had to be decided on the basis of a penalty shootout once again between the two teams.

And much like the Carabao Cup, Liverpool were able to get the better of Chelsea at Wembley for the second time this season. Mason Mount missed the decisive penalty for the Blues as they walked away empty handed from an FA Cup final for the third consecutive time.

Liverpool defeat Chelsea again on penalties

Mohamed Salah had to go off due to injury shortly after the half-hour mark, and was replaced by Diogo Jota. Luis Diaz was the brightest spark for Liverpool’s attack during the initial phase of the game, and had the Chelsea defenders reeling.

However, he wasn’t able to capitalise on the opportunities that were presented during the game. Andy Robertson had a clear chance on goal later in the game, but hit the post. Chelsea had several chances of their own, but poor finishing came back to haunt them again in the final of the FA Cup.

Edouard Mendy was able to make a key save to deny his compatriot, Sadio Mane, in the penalty shootout. But, a miss from Mason Mount ended all hopes of a comeback from the Blues, as his nightmare record at Wembley continues for club and country.

Liverpool have now won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and are halfway through to their dreams of winning the quadruple.
