Why Is a Cricket Pitch Exactly 22 Yards Long? The Surprising History Behind Cricket’s Most Fixed Number

Ever wondered why every cricket pitch on Earth — from a dusty school ground to a packed World Cup final — measures exactly 22 yards? It’s one of sport’s most oddly specific numbers, and the story behind it is older than cricket itself.

The Historical Origin: The “Chain”

The 22-yard length traces back to an old English land-surveying unit called a “chain.” One chain equals exactly 22 yards, and for centuries it was the standard measurement used to lay out fields, roads, and property boundaries across 18th-century England. When cricket’s early laws were first formalized by the Marylebone Cricket Club — the sport’s original rule-making authority — the pitch length was simply fixed at one chain. It hasn’t changed since.

Why Is a Cricket Pitch Exactly 22 Yards Long?

Bat dimensions, boundary sizes, and over counts have all been tweaked throughout cricket’s history. The 22-yard pitch, however, has remained completely untouched for over 250 years. Part of the reason is purely practical: this distance strikes a near-perfect balance for pace bowlers, giving them enough run-up and the ball enough distance to swing through the air, while still giving batters just enough time to react to a fast delivery.

Does the Distance Actually Matter?

Absolutely — change it, and you fundamentally change the sport.

The Takeaway

The 22-yard cricket pitch isn’t an arbitrary number invented for the sport — it’s a leftover from an old English land-measurement unit that happened to create a near-perfect balance between bowler and batter. That accidental precision is exactly why it has survived unchanged for more than two centuries.
