In a revealing interview with Tried & Refused Productions, Kennedy director Anurag Kashyap opened up about why the voice behind countless romantic hits decided to call it quits. According to Kashyap, the answer is simpler than fans might think: creative exhaustion.

“He Was Tired of Singing the Same Thing”

Kashyap didn’t mince words when explaining Singh’s retirement. The filmmaker stated that Arijit was tired of singing repetitive heartbreak songs and wanted to explore his multifaceted artistic identity. “There’s more to Arijit Singh than just heartbreak songs. He wants to do a lot of things,” Kashyap explained.

The Gangs of Wasseypur director emphasized that Singh isn’t just a playback singer—he’s also a filmmaker, music composer, and philanthropist who takes care of his entire hometown. Singh recently made his composing debut with Sanya Malhotra’s critically acclaimed film Pagglait, proving his versatility beyond vocals.

The Industry Pressure Cooker

Kashyap shed light on the immense pressure musicians face in Bollywood. He revealed that when artists are given freedom and time, they create magic. However, the constant demand for “hit songs” creates a suffocating environment. “If you restrict them by saying that the song must be a hit, every musician gets bound,” the filmmaker stated.

This pressure-cooker environment has long plagued the Indian music industry, forcing talented artists into creative boxes that limit their true potential. Singh’s decision to break free represents a bold stand against this system.

Arijit’s Emotional Farewell

In his retirement announcement, Singh expressed gratitude to fans: “I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. It was a wonderful journey.”

The announcement sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with fans and celebrities alike expressing their support for the singer’s decision. Singh’s final projects include high-profile films like Ikkis, Border 2, and O’Romeo.
