One of WhatsApp’s most requested privacy features is here. As of July 2026, you can now set a username on WhatsApp and share that instead of your phone number — a change three billion users have been waiting for.

What’s Changed and Why It Matters

According to Smartprix’s report, WhatsApp started rolling out optional usernames globally on June 29. The feature separates your identity from your SIM card — something rival app Signal introduced back in 2024, but now finally coming to the app most of India actually uses.

Until now, giving someone your WhatsApp contact meant handing over your phone number — a real friction point in online marketplaces, large group chats, or professional settings where you don’t want strangers to have your personal number.

WhatsApp Usernames Are Now Live — You Can Finally Chat Without Sharing Your Number

How Usernames Work

Feature	Detail
Username length	Up to 35 characters
Changeability	Change, remove, or update anytime
Username Key	Optional 4-digit code for extra verification
Public directory	None — no one can search for you
Celebrity protection	WhatsApp reserves known names to prevent impersonation
Phone number visibility	Gradually hidden from other users as rollout completes
Phone number still required?	Yes — needed to create/maintain an account

There’s no public directory, which is actually a smart privacy call — only someone who knows your exact username can initiate contact, naturally filtering out spam. The optional 4-digit Username Key adds another layer: if you enable it, anyone trying to message you must enter the code alongside your username.

How to Set Your Username Right Now

Update WhatsApp to the latest version on Android or iOS
Open Settings
Go to Account
Tap Username
Pick a handle up to 35 characters
Optionally enable a Username Key for added control

If the option isn’t visible yet, check back in a few days — WhatsApp is rolling this out in phases over the coming months.

The Privacy Caveat Worth Knowing

This feature is a genuine improvement, but it’s not a full privacy overhaul. Oxford University professor Carisa Veliz, author of Privacy is Power, noted that while usernames are welcome, WhatsApp still collects significant metadata — who you message, when, and location data — which Meta uses for advertising. End-to-end encryption protects message content, but not this broader activity data. Usernames hide your number from other users, not from WhatsApp itself.

One More Thing: New Leadership, New Direction

This launch also marks the first major product news under Kunal Shah — founder of Indian fintech CRED — who was named the new head of WhatsApp just last week, replacing Will Cathcart. The username feature was already in development before Shah took over, but its timing is notable given WhatsApp’s 500 million+ user base in India, where phone number privacy is a particularly sensitive concern.

The Bottom Line

WhatsApp usernames are a meaningful step toward better privacy for everyday users — even if Meta’s broader data practices haven’t changed. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to stop handing out your number to strangers online, now’s the time to claim your username before the good ones are gone.
