Whalefall Release Date — When and Where to Watch

20th Century releases Duffield’s Whalefall movie in theaters nationwide starting on October 16th, 2026 coming up in the fall. The film will launch exclusively in cinemas before eventually heading to streaming. As a 20th Century Studios production owned by Disney, Whalefall is expected to land on Hulu and/or Disney+ following its theatrical run, likely in late 2026 or early 2027, based on Disney’s typical streaming windows.

What the Teaser Reveals

The teaser doesn’t hold back — it throws viewers straight into the nightmare. The team at Disney’s 20th Century Studios felt “bullish” on using the intense first 15 minutes of the adventure thriller — about a scuba diver who, while looking for his father’s remains, is swallowed whole by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale — to tease what’s to come. “Disney felt it’s such a crazy scene, and it happens so early in the movie, that they felt a little bullish on, ‘Yeah, let’s show them how our movie kicks off and let them wonder where we could go from there,'” Duffield says about the film’s official trailer.

The reaction so far has been electric. Earlier this year, Disney debuted similar footage from the film at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. And after the hype from seeing the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday wore off, the film most people were talking about was Whalefall.

Whalefall Plot — What’s It About?

Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons that his father imparted may be the key to his escape.

The film has drawn comparisons to some of the genre’s best. The film is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours, centering on a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains. The diver gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

Whalefall is directed by American writer/filmmaker Brian Duffield, director of the movies Spontaneous and No One Will Save You previously. The screenplay is written by Brian Duffield & Daniel Kraus; adapted from the book of the same name written by Daniel Kraus, first published in 2023.

Not Your Typical Monster Movie

Director Brian Duffield is taking a uniquely empathetic angle to the story. “Whalefall” is a thrill ride, but Duffield argues that it’s more than a straightforward monster movie. In fact, he says, “this whale is just as much a victim of Austin in this experience.” Part of the storytelling mission is to make audiences fall in love with this animal from the inside out.

“The whale is not a bad guy. The whale doesn’t understand that it’s swallowed Austin. It’s trying to swallow its lunch, and Austin is just a byproduct of that,” Duffield says. “We wanted it to not feel like a monster movie, but to feel like Austin’s inside of a living animal. There’s something horrifying about that, but also something beautiful, too.“

The film also breaks away from typical disaster movie tropes. Duffield compares “Whalefall’s” claustrophobic setting to the UFO sequence in “Nope,” but says he didn’t take much inspiration from other disaster films. Most films in the genre center characters who possess some expertise that allows them to maneuver their way out of a life-or-death situation, but the fun of “Whalefall” is that the hero has no idea what he’s in for. “Austin’s just a teenage boy.”

Science-First Storytelling

The filmmakers went deep on research to keep things grounded. The filmmakers did their homework to make the hungry whale — the largest toothed predator, with the rare (and largely theoretical) power to kill by sound — look and sound as realistic as possible. Duffield studied Daniel Kraus’ 2023 book, “Whalefall,” which the film is based on, and enlisted whale experts to nail the science.

All the underwater scenes were filmed in a tank built at the Radford Studio Center in Studio City, Calif. “Even though we are going to be a very claustrophobic movie, we’re pretty big too!” Duffield says of the film. “We have a lot of spectacle, sometimes in surprising ways, and it just felt like we’ve never seen a movie that is set in a place where most of this movie is set.”

Production Journey

In August 2023, just before the book’s publication, Imagine Entertainment announced that it had struck a pre-emptive film rights deal for Whalefall. In March 2024, 20th Century Studios won a bidding war for distribution for Daniel Kraus’ novel and set Brian Duffield as director and co-writer.

The following year, Austin Abrams was cast as the lead, with Josh Brolin entering negotiations to join. Brolin would be confirmed by June, with Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd also added to the cast. Production was granted a tax credit to film in California, with principal photography beginning in Los Angeles on June 9, 2025. Aaron Morton serves as cinematographer, having previously collaborated with Duffield on No One Will Save You and Spontaneous. Scenes were shot at Monterey Peninsula on June 17.

A Big Year for Austin Abrams

The film comes during a breakout stretch for the young star. Austin Abrams also stars in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, in theaters this September. With Whalefall following just a month later, Abrams is closing out 2026 in two of the most-anticipated genre films of the fall.

Critical Praise for the Source Material

The novel that inspired the film already has plenty of acclaim behind it. Meagan Navarro called Whalefall one of the best horror books of 2023. She raves, “Kraus’ brisk-paced novel toggles between survival horror and an internal journey through grief in the most propulsive way possible. It results in the most pulse-pounding, fast read of the year.”

Adding to the prestige, Brian Duffield, who wrote No One Will Save You (2023) and Spontaneous (2020) in addition to serving as producer on Cocaine Bear (2023), co-wrote the screenplay with author Kraus — whose book Angel Down won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
