If you’ve been waiting for a K-drama that blends historical heartbreak, a legendary fairy tale, and an absolutely stacked cast — your wait is officially over. tvN’s upcoming period melodrama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid just dropped its full lineup, and honestly? It’s giving us chills already.

Everything You Need to Know About Whale Star

The Cast That Has Everyone Buzzing

The confirmed lineup is nothing short of a dream team:

Choi Woo Shik as Kang Eui Hyun — a wealthy independence activist who, after being injured on a dangerous mission, washes ashore and is rescued by the woman he’ll come to love as deeply as his homeland.

Mun Ka Young as Heo Su A — a warm-hearted maid working in a Japanese household whose quiet life is turned upside down the moment she pulls a stranger from the sea.

Heo Nam Jun as Song Hae Su — a fierce, passionate independence fighter fuelled by the pain of personal loss.

Also joining: veteran actors Yoo Jae Myung, Kim Yeo Jin, and Gong Seung Yeon in a special role — adding serious dramatic weight to the ensemble.

A Story Rooted in History and Heartbreak

Set in 1926 Gyeongseong during Japan’s colonial occupation of Korea, Whale Star reimagines Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid against one of the most turbulent periods in Korean history. It’s the kind of backdrop where love stories don’t just ache — they mean something, because every choice carries the weight of an entire nation.

The webtoon source material by Na Yoon-hee already has a devoted fanbase, and the show promises to honour that emotional depth while bringing it to life with stunning visuals and period-perfect atmosphere.
