Wayne Rooney could become the next manager of Championship club Birmingham City after the sacking of John Eustace. The former Manchester United and Everton player left DC United recently, and has been strongly linked with a return to England.
Birmingham CEO Garry Cook is reportedly the driving force behind the move, which could be completed soon.
“It’s the right time. I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the playoffs. It’s not a single thing that’s happened. It’s about timing. I’m going back with nothing lined up,” the 37-year-old said in his parting statement from DC United.
Birmingham set to appoint Wayne Rooney as new head coach
In the statement the club released to dismiss John Eustace, Birmingham City recently announced their desire to play free flowing attacking football. But, fans have been left wondering whether Rooney is the right man for the job based on his recent track record.
He was unable to save Derby County from relegation after their points deduction, and was also unable to guide DC to the playoffs.
Birmingham City are currently sixth in the table with 18 points from 11 games, and will be hopeful of making the playoffs. Fans seem to strongly disagree that Rooney is the right man to lead them towards that goal, but it remains to be seen whether the board of directors feel the same.
