Vought Rising: A New Noir Adventure
The Boys’ universe is expanding in a big way with its first spinoff featuring actors from the hugely popular Prime Video superhero series. Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash are set to headline and produce Vought Rising, a prequel to the mothership series, in which they will reprise their characters from The Boys, Soldier Boy and Stormfront, respectively.
“The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke describes “Vought Rising” as “‘L.A. Confidential’ with superheroes.” The prequel has been in the works for quite some time, with Kripke revealing that it was part of his original pitch to Amazon alongside “Gen V.” The series will embrace a classic film noir style, featuring fedoras, trench coats, and the gritty allure of crime dramas set against a superhero backdrop.
“We’ve actually had this idea in our pocket for a really long time,” Kripke told Variety during an interview after the show’s Comic-Con panel Friday. “And in fact, when I went to Amazon, to pitch spinoffs, I came with two spinoffs, ‘Gen V’ and ‘Vought Rising.’ And at the time, they said, ‘Let’s start with ‘Gen V,’ and we’ll see how it goes and then maybe we’ll do ‘Rising.’ It turns out it went OK. I’m just fascinated with the history of how we became who we became.“
‘The Boys’ itself is basically a film noir. It’s like cops and robbers. So to really do it classically with like fedoras and trench coats and salacious stuff, and like ‘L.A. Confidential’ with superheroes, is just going to be super fun. And Jensen and Aya, they’re superstars. They’re gonna blow the doors off.”
Returning Favorites and New Challenges
Alongside the announcement of “Vought Rising,” it was confirmed that Jensen Ackles would reprise his role as Soldier Boy in the fifth and final season of “The Boys.” This continuation of Soldier Boy’s storyline is highly anticipated, especially given the unresolved tension between him and Homelander, which promises a rich exploration of their complex father-son dynamic.
“He’s going to be in Season 5 quite a lot,” Kripke said. “We want him to be a big character. There’s a lot of good father-son emotion between him and Homelander that we never really got a chance to play that we’re really interested in.”
Expanding the Supernatural Alumni in The Boys
Eric Kripke, the mastermind behind both “Supernatural” and “The Boys,” continues to bring familiar faces from his supernatural saga into his superhero world. Jeffrey Dean Morgan joined “The Boys” in Season 4, and now Kripke is in talks with Jared Padalecki to appear in Season 5. Although Padalecki’s role is still being decided, fans eagerly await the potential reunion of the “Supernatural” cast within the gritty, dark universe of “The Boys.”
“I have been talking to Jared, we’ve been texting back and forth,” Kripke said. “I don’t know yet if it’ll be a one-episode guest spot or something bigger. We’re still trying to figure out what would be the best role for him. But I’m gonna bring in Jared. Everyone says, you’re collecting your ‘Supernatural’ Pokémon, but the truth is, I love him and you try to work with people that you love and it makes the job more fun. And I just love those guys.”
Real-World Reflections
“The Boys” has never shied away from reflecting real-world issues within its storyline. The Season 4 finale, titled “Assassination Run,” was retitled to “Season Four Finale” and included a “viewer discretion advised” warning due to its coincidental timing with a real-world assassination attempt. Eric Kripke emphasized that while “The Boys” tackles political and social themes, it firmly condemns real-world violence.
“We are a superhero TV show. We’re fictional,” Kripke said. “Obviously, it’s a political show with a point of view so there’s gonna be some horrible coincidences. But anything real-world we condemn and are against in the strongest possible terms. We’re just making our superhero show.”
Character Development and Emotional Arcs
One of the standout moments in “The Boys” Season 4 finale was Kimiko’s first real-world speech, highlighting her character’s growth and the emotional depth of the series. As the show moves into its final season, fans are eager to see how these character arcs will conclude and what new dimensions “Vought Rising” will add to the story.
“I don’t think she’s gonna be a chatterbox,” Kripke said. “I think we have to find a way that she’s still special and interesting and she shouldn’t just talk like everyone. So frankly, we’re figuring it out. We’re figuring out what the rhythm and cadence of her dialogue will be. But she will be talking!”
As “The Boys” gears up for its fifth and final season, the announcement of “Vought Rising” brings excitement and anticipation for fans. With a noir-inspired approach and the return of beloved characters, the prequel promises to enrich the already complex and captivating universe of “The Boys.” Eric Kripke and his talented cast are set to deliver another unforgettable chapter in this groundbreaking superhero saga.
